On Thursday, March 21, 2019, at the age of 73, Rosa Wells Carter, the family matriarch, departed this earthly life to receive her heavenly crown. Rosa Wells Carter, also known as Rosa Lee, was born Tuesday, February 12, 1946, in Richland County to the late Douglas and Carrie Bell Lowman Wells. A graduate of the Richland County public school system, she worked as a Healthcare Giver over the course of her career, retiring from the Babcock Center.

Growing up in the church, initially worshiping at The Church of Our Lord and Savior of the Apostolic Faith before becoming a member of the Progressive Church for 14 years and finally joining The Church in the Lord Jesus Christ of the Apostles’ Doctrine located at 1444 Olympia Avenue in Columbia, SC, she was affectionately known as “Sister Rosa” to church members and friends. She served on the cooking committee as well as the cleaning committee at her church, where she greatly enjoyed attending services and spending time with her family. Sister Carter loved her pastor and church members as well as serving her community; in this capacity she brought the “Annual Clothes Give Away” to her church.

A devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend, Sister Rosa was married to the late Roosevelt Carter, Jr Their union was blessed with three children: Chrisandra, KaPonda, and Joey. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her son Roosevelt “Joey” Carter, a grandson Victor Scott, three sisters: Barbara Ann Wells, Gracie Jeffcoat, and Virginia Chisholm; and two brothers: Phillip Douglas Wells and Samuel Lewis Wells.

She leaves to cherish beautiful and fond memories two daughters: Chrisandra Carter and KaPonda (Robert) Telford, both of Columbia, South Carolina; five grandchildren: Maurice Lindsey, Robert DeVon Telford, Erik Telford, Cameron “CJ” Carter, and Bobby Terrell (LB) Simmons; three great-grandchildren; three brothers: Joseph (Michelle) Wells of Franklinville, New Jersey, James Wells, and Michael (Crystal) Wells, both of Columbia; a special cousin Dorothy Jean Davis; friend Lavon Murray; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, friends, and church members.
