Rose and Joe married on September 10, 1960. When the army buddies married the sisters Rose, Joe, Josie, and Robert became not only family but life-long friends. Rose and Joe moved to Wallingford, CT where the first of their four sons, Ralph, was born.
A year and a half later Rose and Joe moved back to Harrisburg, PA where Joseph, Michael, and Matthew were born. While Joe worked as a machine operator at Thompson, Ramo and Woolridge, Rose had her hands full raising four boys all within 27 months of one another. It was hard work, but Rose was a dedicated mother to her four young sons.
Rose and Joe moved back to Connecticut in 1967 when Joe took a job as a surveyor and project manager for the Engineering Department of Wallingford, CT. Once her boys got a little older Rose worked for several years as a teacher’s aide in their school at Rock Hill Elementary School. The family moved to San Antonio, TX in 1974 when Joe took a position with Church’s Fried Chicken Construction Division.
Between 1978 and 1983 the family owed a delicatessen in downtown San Antonio off Broadway and Travis. Rose was instrumental in the success of Gdovin’s Gdeli. She was the head chef making thousands of pans of lasagna and other customer favorites each year.
Rose’s sons loved her deeply. As Rose and Joe aged, their sons were devoted to caring for both their parents. Rose and Joe lived next door to, and were cared for, by Michael and his family for many years before they moved to Spring Branch in 2006 to live with Matthew and his family.
Rose loved her family deeply. She was a dedicated daughter, sister, wife, mother, and grandmother. One way Rose showed her love was with her cooking.
Rose loved cooking for her family. It was not uncommon for Rose to serve up to 20 people at her famous Sunday dinners. Sunday dinners were filled with great food, laughter, fun, love, and a little chaos.
Rose passed her love of cooking on to her sons and grandchildren. All her sons are excellent cooks and have wonderful memories of cooking and laughing with their mother in her kitchen. In 2013 Rose created a cookbook containing all her favorite recipes for her grandson Mikey to take with him when he started school at Texas A&M University.
Rose loved playing games. Some of her favorites were Scrabble, Cribbage, and almost all card games. She also loved games of chance such as Texas Hold ‘Em, Poker, Blackjack, Craps, and Slots (especially the Double Diamond Deluxe).
Rose’s love of games extended to watching game shows. Some of her favorites were Jeopardy! , Wheel of Fortune, Family Feud, and The $25,000 Pyramid.
Rose loved to watch sports. She was a huge San Antonio Spurs fan who watched nearly all their games. Rose loved watching college basketball.
Each year she created a March Madness bracket and rooted for her picks. During football season Rose and her son Michael created and organized the family football pool. Rose was the record keeper and accountant … she loved it!
Rose was artistic. She wrote beautiful poetry and photographed scenes of nature such as flowers, deer, and sunsets. Rose enjoyed supporting her sons and grandchildren in all their endeavors.
She attended hundreds of basketball games, soccer games, football games, baseball games, tennis matches, piano recitals, band gigs, acting performances, Christmas pageants, and awards ceremonies. The love and support Rose devoted to her family and friends will be greatly missed by all!
