Obituary for Rosemary Thompson Rosemary Wood Thompson, 91, passed away on Sunday December 2, 2018. She was born on September 22, 1927 in Miami FL, to the late James Virgil Wood and Mary Powers Wood. Rosemary grew up in Miami, graduating from Miami Edison High School in 1945.
After high school, she worked for Eastern Airlines in Miami. Following her marriage to William Harold Thompson in 1948, she eventually retired from Eastern to focus on raising her family. In 1962, Harold, a pilot for Eastern, and Rosemary transferred to the Atlanta area, eventually settling in Jonesboro, where they were actively involved in supporting their four children’s many activities.
During their years in Jonesboro, Rosemary was an active member of the Altar Guild at St. Augustine’s Episcopal Church. After retiring 1980, Rosemary and Harold built a lake front home at Lake Hartwell, GA. where they enjoyed many years of golf, boating, gardening and their many friends at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church.
After taking up golf in her retirement, Rosemary won many awards in tournaments for her age group. During retirement, Rosemary and Harold also became involved with American International Aid & Lutheran Social Services, using his flight benefits to help bring orphans from countries such as South Korea, India, and Haiti to the United States on behalf of adoptive parents who were not able to make the trips overseas. In 1998, Rosemary and Harold relocated to Newnan, GA.
to be closer to their children and grandchildren where they became active members of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church. A memorial service for Rosemary will be on Saturday December 15, 2018 at 10 o’clock at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church with The Rev. Hazel Smith Glover officiating.
The family is receiving friends in the Parish Hall of the church following the service. Rather than flowers, the family respectfully requests memorial contributions to St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 576 Roscoe Rd. Newnan, GA 30263.
Rosemary was preceded in death by Harold, her husband of 65 years, and her brother Robert. Survivors include children, Jeff (Angie) Thompson, Jim (Mary) Thompson, Barbara “Babs” Powley, and Amy (Daryl) Jones; grandchildren Will (Kalee), Tyler (Janie), Daniel (Brittany), Samuel, Derek (Alena), Andrew, and Max (Joan); great grandchildren Daisy, Darcy, Finley, Sawyer, Evie, May, Tallulah and Henry.
