Flemming April 07, 1924 – March 03, 2019 Share this obituary Sign Guestbook| Send Sympathy Card Ruth Ellen Flemming was born April 7, 1924 in Assumption Illinios, she passed away on Sunday, March 3, 2019. Born to Ruby Pearl Fortner Diss and Chauncey Mitchel Diss, the 3rd of 8 children. She married her high school sweetheart, Clarence Wesley Flemming Jr., to which union two children were born, Janet Marie and Robert Lee.

Ruth is survived by her children – Janet (Roger) Hackard and Robert (Susan) Flemming, Grandcildren – Marsha Unsell, Annette (Brian) Rhodes, Jennifer (Jason) Hancock, Kelly (Patrick Cole) Flemming, Great-Grandchildren – Brandie Barnett, Chris Unsell, Shade Unsell, Macayla Rhodes, Laney Hancock, Cooper Hancock, Great-Great-Grandchildren – Katelynn Barnett, Olivia Barnett, Alice Barnett, Sisters – Mary Lawyer and June Crane, Sister-in-law – Shirley Flemming, Brothers – Kenny (Mona) Diss, Frank (Christine) Diss, and lots of nieces and nephews. Ruth was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, her parents, and a grandson, Shadd Hackard. Three brothers Jack Diss, Chauncey Diss, and Jessie “Billy” Diss.

She gave her life to Jesus at a young age. Ruth had fond memories of attending youth activities with her brother, Chauncey. In later years, she loved going to church with Janet and Roger when she stayed with them.

Ruth met Clarence when she was in high school through a cousin of Clarence’s. Once they met there was no one else for either of them. They did almost everything together.

When Clarence worked out of town Ruth went along or Clarence refused to go. She went along on Clarence’s hunting trips to Colorado and Clarence even convinced her that she needed to learn to shoot for her protection in the mountains. Ruth was a trooper and she learned well enough to shoot her own deer and proudly showed Clarence that she hadn’t missed like he said she did.

If you know Ruth, you would understand that she was not a real rugged outdoors woman, so the deer hunting was quite an achievement for her. Ruth was a homemaker as Clarence did not want her to work outside the home. She loved her family.

Two things she looked forward to each year were the Diss Family reunion and Christmas. Ruth so enjoyed the reunion with her brothers and sisters and their families spending time talking about the past. She loved spending time with her family at Christmas time, but the biggest part was getting or making gifts for them.

Ruth loved to sew and made many different things. She often said she would have loved to be a professional seamstress. She made many aprons for family members who wear them with pride.

But her biggest sewing projects were making quilts. She even got Clarence involved in this hobby. Together they made somewhere around 60 or more quilts and enjoyed giving them to family members and friends.

Ruth had other hobbies over the years. She worked with Cub Scouts when Robert was young. She belonged to a University of Missouri Extension Club, and a ladies bowling league.

One of her great enjoyments was going to the St. Charles Senior Center and learning to paint. She tried out several different types of painting, but water color was her thing. From the painting lessons evolved a group of friends known as the paint ladies that took turns meeting at each other’s houses.

Ruth had a great sense of humor and loved to tease. She even played a trick on Susan right at the last and giggled like a little kid. Although she will be greatly missed by her family and those who knew and loved her, we know she’s finally content to be back again with her best friend and the love of her life, Clarence.
