Ruth King October 24, 1931 – April 20, 2019 Share this obituary View/Sign Guest Book Ruth King, age 87, of Olympia Fields, IL passed away peacefully on April 20, 2019. She was preceded in death several years ago by her husband of 60 years, Norman Roberts Bruce King, and also her sister Mildred and parents Frederick and Helen Rayfield. She was a devoted mother to her five children, Suzanne (John) Rausch, Diane King (Jesus Cruz), David (Fangching) King, Andrea King (Eric Slear), and Steven King.

She was also a caring grandmother to her six grandchildren, John, Eric and Lauren Rausch, Lorrie and Alexander King, and Jessica Slear, loving aunt to Bob and Jim Chapman, and a close-knit cousin to Melody Daboll. Ruth was born on October 24, 1931 in Brantford, Ontario and she was raised in Toronto. She loved her Canadian roots and she graduated in 1953 from the RN program at Toronto General Hospital.

She married Norman in 1956 and they lived in Toronto for several years before moving to Indianapolis, IN from 1959-1966. They then settled in Olympia Fields, where Ruth remained a resident for 53 years. After raising her five children, Ruth returned to nursing in the 1980s for several decades.

Her patients and co-workers enjoyed her compassionate and non-nonsense approach to care, as well as her humorous nature. In the neighborhood, she was known as “Dr. Ruth,” with a knack for helping others while maintaining her high-spirited bedside manner. Ruth loved spending time with her many dear long-time friends and was a devoted bridge player and member of the Olympia Fields Women’s Club.

In her earlier years, she enjoyed counted cross stitch and tennis and bowling leagues. We have many treasured memories of Ruth, as she was unique in her down-to-earth manner, sparkling personality, and quick wit. Private services will be held at a future date.
