She was born May 26th, 1927 in Mercedes, Texas to Charles and Ella Locket Sweeney. She grew up in Alamo Heights (San Antonio), where she graduated from Alamo Heights High School and the University of Corpus Christi.

She married George Marek on March 25th, 1950. The have two sons, Robert (Rob) and David (Dallas). Ruth was a kindergarten and elementary school teacher in San Antonio and Corpus Christi.

She taught Sunday School for many years. She had a lifelong love of music and played the piano almost every day throughout her life. Ruth and George were founding members of the Fellowship of Oso Creek.

They were members of SPJST Lodge 79. They were members of NAMI and TXAMI, advocating for people with mental illness. She loved her family and kept them connected.

Her version of the internet involved telephoning relatives from Colorado to the east coast and everywhere in between. She loved to travel and visited over 40 of the 50 states and much of Canada, mostly by car – visiting friends and relatives along the way. She loved cars and driving – learning to drive in high school in a red 1939 Ford Convertible.

She was still driving at 91 in a black Ford Fusion. She never slowed down. Mrs. Marek was preceded in death by her parents and three siblings.

She is survived by two sons and by many nephews, nieces, cousins and friends, including her guardian angel, Kandee Richadson Guartuche. A memorial service will be held at 2 PM on Saturday, January 19th at The Fellowship of Oso Creek, 7402 Yorktown Blvd, Corpus Christi, TX 78414, followed by a reception at the church. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Fellowship of Oso Creek or to the charity of your choice.
