••• Salvador E. Perez-Méndez (know to those close to him as Chiche, Elo, Abuelo and Grandpa) died peacefully in his home at the age of 94, surrounded by family, on the evening of Friday, February 2.

Salvador was born on January 29, 1926, to Castula Perez and Wenseslao Mendez, and raised in Duverge-Puerto Escondido, Dominican Republic. After marrying his lifelong partner, Altagracia Nin, they and their six children — Nevis, Solfanhnis, Dounel, Adela, Clara and Enrique — made a new home in Los Minas-Santo Domingo, Dom. Rep.

In 1989, Salvador and Altagracia immigrated to the United States and made a new home in Paterson, New Jersey with their second oldest daughter, Solfanhnis, her 3 children (his grandchildren) and his son-in-law. It was not until 1994 that their children would begin their own journeys to reconnect the family in the U.S. — with daughter Nevis the last to make the trip, in 2010. It is in the Paterson home of Salvador and Altagracia, where family dinners are had, family decisions are made, tears are dried, prayers are said and holidays are celebrated.

Salvador was a brave and proud man who inspired his family to always work harder and be their best. He was always quick with a joke, but also knew how to listen and offer advice on dealing with life’s problems. He also liked a good cigar, and often rolled his own.

He loved playing pool and to go fishing, often taking Enrique and Dounel with him. Salvador will always be remembered by his grandchildren, Raquel, Willy, Edward, Johanny, Raynel, Elizabeth, Evelyn, Melissa, Ninoska, Idalia, Brady, Shirley, Thais, Emmanuel, Alanis, Amy and Melvin, as well as his great-grandchildren, Xavier, Joshua, Xavier, Ambra, Aithen, Brianna, Yanaliz and Alex, as being an inspiration and role model for generations to come. He will live forever in their hearts and minds.
