OBITUARY Samuel “Sam” Frederick Dennis Sr. February 1, 1928 – January 30, 2019 Sam, 90, passed away Wednesday, January 29th, 2019 in Charlotte, with family close by. Born February 1st, 1928 in Columbia, South Carolina, he was a son of the late Magilbra I. Dennis and Mary Isla Graham Dennis. Following graduation from Columbia High School in 1944, Sam furthered his education at the University of South Carolina where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration with a major in Accounting.
After graduation in 1950, he served 2 years in the U.S. Air Force. His career as an accountant began in 1952 with Humble Oil and Refining Co. (Exxon Corporation) from which he retired in 1992 as a Real Estate Marketing Executive. Sam was a member of Providence Baptist Church of Charlotte where he served in many capacities, but especially loved singing in the church choir.
His family fondly remembers a house full of singing and music. The joy of Sam’s life was his family. He adored his wife, the former Sarah Lessie Jernigan, whom he married in 1955.
He was also a devoted father and grandfather who attended all school and sports activities. Sam led a busy social life in retirement—golf every Monday with friends from church, book club on Monday evenings, choir on Wednesday, and senior choir on Thursday. He served on the Exxon Annuity Board, was twice president of the homeowners’ association, and recently served as president of his Sunday school class.
Sam was a past member of the Charlotte Choral Society and served in many sports and other organizations while his children were growing up. He especially loved hosting Sunday night suppers for his family, who will cherish memories of food, laughter and fellowship. He is survived by his sister, Caroline Davis of Columbia, South Carolina; his four children, Samuel Frederick Dennis, Jr. (Lynne) of Madison, Wisconsin, Bruce Graham Dennis (Linda), Amy Louise Goodson (Landon), and Jody Margaret Dennis, all of Charlotte; his grandchildren, Isaac Evans Dennis, Zoe Margaret Dennis, Stella Rae Dennis, Graham Edward Dennis, Connor Samuel Dennis, Adrian Grant Goodson, Mallory Sarah Goodson, and Brett Killian Goodson.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Sarah Lessie Jernigan Dennis, who passed away in 2016. A service to celebrate Sam’s life will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, February 5th at Providence Baptist Church, 4921 Randolph Road. The family will receive friends following the service.
