Sandra Gail Multanen Geer May 21, 1944 – February 01, 2019 Share this obituary Send Flowers View/Sign Guest Book| Send Sympathy Card Sandra Gail Multanen Geer, 74, passed away on February 1st 2019, in the comfort of her home, with her husband by her side. Sandy was born May 21, 1944 to Clifford and Elena Multanen in Clatskanie, Oregon. Sandy was the third of five children who were raised on a beautiful nursery outside of town.
Sandy graduated from Clatskanie High School in 1962. Soon after, she moved to Portland and eventually obtained a medical secretary certificate in 1966. Sandy’s cautious optimism took her to California where she obtained a position at UC Berkeley in the School of Public Health.
That is where she met the love of her life, Gary Geer. The two shared stolen glances for over a year before Gary was drafted to the Vietnam War. On a weekend home between basic training and deployment, he finally worked up the courage to ask her on a date.
The two correspond through letters until his return. They were married a year later on October 4, 1970 in the Clatskanie Apostolic Lutheran Church. Together they had three children, Shawna, Kimberly and Erica.
Over the next forty-eight years, their lives took them many places; The Dalles, Corvallis, Vancouver, Anchorage, and finally back to Clatskanie where they spent their first four years of retirement caring for their beloved grandchildren. Everywhere Sandy went she impacted those she met with her quiet, steady grace, always with a smile and a twinkle in her eye. Sandy’s unwavering faith carried her through life’s journey.
Her salvation, as well as the salvation of her loved ones, was of the upmost importance to her. She was a fiercely devoted wife, mother, grandmother, daughter, sister, aunt and friend. Her passionate advocacy for individuals with disabilities was paramount.
Her selfless love of life, her family and her Heavenly Father were evident to those that were fortunate enough to know her. Sandy lived by the ideology, “if it’s according to God’s will, it will be”. She was always willing to step back with open arms to let life play out according to God’s plan.
Sandy’s true desire was to serve others. In the last two years of her life, if she wasn’t spending time traveling with her husband, you could find her at her sister Sonja’s house, where she took great delight in meeting and helping those in need. Sandy was strong in her beliefs and her convictions, and in the end, she had the strength and courage to understand that her life’s work on Earth was complete.
Sandy was preceded in death by her father and mother, Clifford and Elena Multanen, and her beloved older brother Monty and his wife Sue. She is survived by her husband Gary, her daughters Shawna, Kimberly and Erica, and her four grandchildren Emily, Zachary, Elena and Finn; her siblings Sonja, Gary and Cliff and their respective families, as well as numerous cousins and other relatives. Sandy leaves a legacy of kindness, quiet strength and wisdom that will forever leave a mark on those whose lives she has touched.
Sandy’s funeral service will be held on Saturday, February 9, 2019, at 3:00pm in the Clatskanie High School Auditorium. A private interment is planned for next week. Charitable contributions can be made on her behalf to the Apostolic Lutheran Western Mission, P.O. Box 1304, Kalama, WA 98625.
