Sarah Colvin Rackley October 22, 1923 – February 25, 2019 Share this obituary Sign Guestbook| Send Private Condolences| Send Sympathy Card Sarah Elizabeth Colvin Rackley, 95, passed away in her residence on Monday, February 25, 2019. She was born October 22, 1923 to Lena Core and James Tate Colvin in Wilmington, NC. Sarah’s father was a member of the Junior Order United American Mechanics (JrOUAM) and at his death she was eligible to enter the Junior Order Children’s Home in Lexington, NC.

She entered the home in 1930 where she remained until she graduated high school. She then returned to Wilmington where she met and married Sanford George Rackley. They had two children, Sanford George, Jr. and Kate Elizabeth.

In 1949 they relocated to Fayetteville, NC. They joined Cedar Falls Baptist Church in 1950 and remained members until their deaths. Sanford and Sarah had a shared hobby of growing roses.

Through this interest they became charter members of the Fayetteville Rose Society, members of the American Rose Society and the Carolinas District of ARS. Sarah was an American Rose Society accredited rose show judge for twenty-five years. She served as Secretary of the Carolinas District, and District Chairman of Judges.

She was awarded the Silver Honor Medal for Outstanding Service to the District and the Outstanding Judge Award. She also received the Bronze Medal for outstanding service to the Fayetteville Rose Society. Sarah was preceded in death by her parents; husband; brothers, Thomas Franklin Colvin and James D. “J.

D.” Colvin; sister, Hilda Core Colvin; and half-brother, Donald R. Sellers. She is survived by a son, Sanford G. Rackley, Jr. (Gail); daughter, Kate O’Brien (Pat); grandson, Jay O’Brien; granddaughter, Anne Dwiggins (Chris); great-grandsons, James O’Brien, Patrick Dwiggins, Sean and Danny Quay. She is also survived by her much loved nieces and nephews, Luanne Humphries (James); Kristina Rose (Bryan); great-great-nieces and namesake, Sarah Dovia Colvin; nephews, J. D. Colvin, Jr., Robert and Danny Colvin.

A memorial service will be held at Cedar Falls Baptist Church, 6181 Ramsey Street, on Saturday, March 23, 2019, at 11:00 AM with Rev. Dr. Jeffrey D. Sholar officiating, followed by a visitation at the church. Interment will be private.

Memorials may be designated to the organ fund at Cedar Falls Baptist Church, 6181 Ramsey Street, Fayetteville, NC 28311, or to the American Children’s Home, P. O. Box 1288, Lexington, NC 27293.
