Obituary for Saundra M. Handa Saundra Mae Handa, first born daughter of Charles Gerard and Mary Inez Tinsley was born at Kings County Hospital, Brooklyn, New York on December 21, 1944. She was the oldest of four daughters. As a youngster, Saundra was always inquisitive and intelligent.
She was a graduate of Franklin K. Lane High School and later attended New York Community College to further her education. She was first confirmed at Westminister Bethany United Presbyterian Church in 1958 and converted to Catholicism in her early 20’s. She gave birth to two wonderful and intelligent children Amun ( which means peace) and Asha (which means faith).
She moved to New Jersey where she held the position of a lab chemistry technician at Ashland Oil Company. Due to her illness, she returned to New York during the 1983. She secured a unique occupation as a US Treasury Agent Officer for the Internal Revenue Service.
She was an outstanding employee serving the citizens and taxpayers of our beloved country for 23 years. She moved to Queens, NY to raise her children in an upper rural neighborhood. Upon her Retirement, she relocated to Williamsburg, Virginia to languish near Newport News Virginia, the birth place of her beloved.
She dedicated herself to serving the Lord at Saint Bede Roman Catholic Church. She lent her beautiful soprano vocals in the adult choir and visited and prayed with the sick as a joy ministry. In addition, she was a member of the Rosary Alter Society, volunteered at Food Pantries and donated to various Charities.
As did her mother Inez, she also served as an administration coordinator at the Board of Elections during both the November 2007 and 2011 polls that lead to the presidency of President Obama. She spent precious time traveling to many places including her sunny vacation home in Orlando, Florida, and a ski resort in Massanutten , WV with her loving family members and friends, the Wesley’s. Saundra leaves to cherish her memory her son Amun, daughter Asha, son-in-law Charles Pierre, Amun’s fiancé Trina , five granddaughters : Aleysa who married Eli Daniel , Ashley Handa, Amani Handa, Solei Pierre and April Handa two grandsons: Charles Pierre III, Amun Handa II and one great grandson, Avery Daniel.
She will be missed by her three sisters Beverly, Debra and Marie, nieces and nephews Angela Andrew, Beverly, Frederick, Joann, Asma, Atiyah and Martin, three great nieces, six great nephews, and a host of cousins, relatives, family and friends. . Saundra loved her family deeply and dearly, and in her final days of being surrounded by many loved ones, attending her last Sunday mass and awaiting patiently for her homecoming to the Lord, she will forever be in our spirits, our hearts and most of all the memories of her soul.
