Shirley was born April 26, 1925 in Knox County, the daughter of Leonard and Icle (McBeth) Bowman. Surviving are one son, Rodney (Jinx) Thorne of Wyoming; one daughter, Valerie Wagher of Toulon; five grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.
