OBITUARY Shirley Mae Blome March 26, 1932 – January 4, 2019 On Friday, January 4, 2019, Shirley Mae Blome passed away at 86 at Emerald Groves where she lived for the past two years. Shirley was born March 26, 1932, on a farm near Newell, Iowa, to Clarence and Elsie Kuhn. She attended Iowa State Teacher’s College and the University of Iowa, as well as completing graduate work at Montana State University and the University of Northern Colorado.

Shirley was married to Arvin C. Blome for nearly 59 years. She felt blessed by her son Brad Blome and daughter-in-law Debbie, her daughter Tracy and son-in-law Joel Saxen and their daughters, Katie, Megan, and Callie. She LOVED her granddaughters; they were her pride and joy.

She was also fortunate to have two great-grandsons, Malcolm and Maximus. Shirley taught elementary school for over 30 years in Iowa, Kentucky, Montana, and Colorado. While in Colorado, she helped develop and co-direct Sky High Hope Camp, a camp for kids with cancer ages 6-18.

She served on the Board of Directors for the National Children’s Oncology Camps of America ns volunteered as a patient representative at Denver’s Children’s Hospital. Shirley and Arvin loved to travel and camp. They camped in 40 states and traveled to many foreign countries.

After her retirement in 1991, the couple moved to Arizona and lived in Fountain of the Sun. She was active in golf, bridge, and the travel club. She was well-known for her large collection of teddy bears.

Shirley is preceded in death by her parents, Elsie and Clarence, her husband Arvin, and Tracy’s first husband, Rick Berry. She is survived by her sisters Darlene and Clarice, both her children and their spouses, her granddaughters and great grandsons, and her very many nieces’ nephews.
