Shirley’s Obituary Shirley Sue Carley, 83, of Denton passed away on Sunday, March 24, 2019 in Denton, Texas. She was born in Dallas, Texas on September 8, 1935 to Virgil and Mae (Greener) Dunbar. Shirley grew up in the Dallas/Fort Worth area and graduated from Pleasant Grove High School in 1954.

Soon after, Shirley and Bobby started their life together on a blind date in 1954 and was married one short year later. Shirley told her mother that if the date went bad she would call her to tell her to come home but instead they ended up at the drive-in movie and the rest is history. Their wonderful adventure began with four years in the Air Force and then a move to Houston where they started their family and became part of an air traffic control community.

Their life took them in many directions but landed them in Oklahoma City for 20 years. While in Oklahoma City, Shirley had a successful career as a Payroll Specialist at the Oklahoma City Golf & Country Club where she retired in 1997. Then headed back home to Texas.

Shirley and Bobby’s adventure wasn’t all about their professional careers and moving – it was really defined by their love for each other, their family, their friends, and the people they met in all of their worldly travels. Their travels took them to all 50 states and the lower provinces of Canada. They even made their way to Europe and Israel.

Some of the best times of their lives. Shirley’s favorite hobby was gardening – something she learned from her mother. Everyone was envious of her gardens – from Houston, to Hurst, to Oklahoma City, and back to Denton – her gardens were always spectacular.

Decorating was something Shirley truly liked to do. Bobby would often come home to a rearranged house. She also liked reading and crossword puzzles – this was another thing that she and Bobby would do together, Bobby would start them… and she would finish them.

We’re still not sure who got the most answers correct. Shirley and Bobby were married for over 63 years. Bobby said, “From day one, this was a partnership; and every life occurrence was a decision that was made happily together, for the most part – J.” Shirley was the love of Bobby’s life.

He will miss her every day. Shirley’s love for Bobby and her family was seen in everything she did. She loved them dearly and wanted to know everything about their lives.

She was happiest when being with them. She is survived by her husband, Bobby Carley, son Todd Carley of Oklahoma City, daughter Stacy Rothermel of Palm City, Florida, brother James Dunbar and his wife Becky of Burleson. She is also survived by four grandchildren, Jordan Rothermel, Jamie Rothermel, Stephanie Tachell, and Dustin Hey; and two great-grandchildren, Lilly Hey and Tobias Tachell.

She was preceded in death by her parents Virgil and Mae Dunbar, sister Sonia Hunt, and son Mark Carley. The family will receive friends on Thursday, March 28, 2019 from 1:00-2:00 pm at DeBerry Funeral Directors in Denton, Texas. Funeral services will follow the visitation at 2:00 pm in the Chapel of DeBerry Funeral Directors.

Interment will be held in Oklahoma City.
