Obituary for Simon James Matela Simon James Matela, age 20, passed away suddenly at his home on Thursday, January 10, 2019, after a brief illness. He was born in Sewickley on June 18, 1998, to Abigail Matela and Christopher Kitner. Simon was a 2016 Graduate of Avonworth High School and was studying Creative Writing at Chatham University.

He was a compassionate friend and devoted to his family. Simon had an immense heart and always had the consideration of others in mind. He was wise, funny, extremely resilient and his unique voice and perspective shone in his brilliant writing.

Simon is survived by his mother Abigail Matela and father Christopher Kitner and Missy (Conely), his brother Oliver Mazie and stepfather Martin Mazie, sister Ella, grandparents; Jacqueline and John Matela and Mary Lynn and Fred Kitner, aunts and uncles; Eunice and Gavin (Matela), Melissa and Nathan (Graff), Maggie and Ed (Hyp) and cousins Esmé, Indiana, Lillian, Ian and Max. Memorial visitation will be held on Tuesday, January 15 from 2-4 and 6-8pm at the Lawrence T. Miller Funeral Home, Inc., 460 Lincoln Avenue in Bellevue. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the American Diabetes Association.
