Obituary for Sophie G. Beck It is with great sadness that we acknowledge the death of our mother Sophie Girgawi Beck, on December 11, 2018. Mom died as she lived, on her own terms. She was born on January 1, 1925 in Cairo, Egypt.

She was the youngest of six children and attended the American College for Girls from preschool through high school. She received her bachelor’s degree from the American University in Cairo. In 1952, she came to the United States to attend graduate school at the University of Denver.

She met our father at a dance during graduate school. He spoke of the lovely cobalt blue dress she wore, and Mom was glad she met someone who was familiar with the political crisis in Egypt, and did not want to talk about mummies and the Pyramids. They graduated with their master’s Degrees in Social Work in 1954.

Our Mother worked with children and adolescents as a psychiatric social worker at Fort Logan Mental Health Center in Denver for twenty years. After retirement, our father and mother moved to Saco, Maine where they lived for ten years, before returning to Colorado to be closer to family. She was predeceased by her mother, father, brother Fawzi, sisters Margaret, Marie, Matilda, Mounira and Aida.

Her husband, Walter E. Beck died in 2015. She is survived by her children Dr. Mark A. Beck of Ermo, South Carolina (Pia), Margaret Beck, of Denver, Colorado and Dr. Susan Beck of Fort Collins and her grandchildren: Nick and Luca Baxter, Cole, Camilla and Ethan Beck as well as her extended family in Canada, England and Egypt. Mom’s memorial service will be on December 22, 2018 at the Primrose Studio.
