Stanley John Gilkes, 91, of Granville, died Friday, June 15, 2018 at the Selma Markowitz Care Center in Newark operated by Hospice of Central Ohio. Stan was born November 7, 1926 in Youngstown, Ohio to the late John and Josephine (Kotodzris ) Gilkes. He attended Immaculate Conception School and was a 1945 graduate of East High School in Youngstown.

Stan became a certified watchmaker by the Horological Institute of America, Washington, D.C. in 1949 and was an accomplished clock repairman for many decades. A U.S. Army veteran, Stan proudly served his country during World War II and Korea. He retired from the Newark Air Force Station.

He was a member of The Church of St. Edward the Confessor, Polish National Alliance, Newark Maennerchor Trustee, and former member of AMVETS in Youngstown. Stan was preceded in death by wife and mother of his three daughters, Barbara (Ban) Gilkes (1986); parents; sisters and brothers-in-law, Jeannette and John Voytko, Dorothy and Sam Patta, and Weston Johnstone. Stan is survived by his wife, Helga (Shroeck) Gilkes; daughters, Barbara Gilkes, Mary (Gary) Davis, and Joanne (Greg) Haas; grandchildren, William (Catherine) Davis, Elizabeth, Jennifer, and Andrew Davis, Lisa (fiancé Josh Buehler) Haas, Susan (Mark) Holtkamp, and Jonathan Haas; step-daughters, Angela (Larry) Ferraris, and Erica (Rod) Clark; step-granddaughters, Kala (Malachi) Ankrom, and Betsy Clark; step-great grandson, Jaxson Ankrom; sister, Josephine Johnstone; and five nephews and their families, also survive.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held Thursday, June 21, 2018 at 10:00 A.M. at The Church of St. Edward the Confessor, 785 Newark-Granville Road, in Granville. Burial will follow at Maple Grove Cemetery in Granville where military honors will be rendered by the Licking County Veterans Alliance. The family will receive friends one hour prior the service at the church.
