OBITUARY Stanley R. George February 24, 1921 – October 28, 2018 On October 28, 2018, our dear Stanley was called home. He departed this earthly life to gain a heavenly home in the presence of Jesus Christ. Stanley was born on February 24, 1921 in Port Morant, St. Thomas, Jamaica to the late Albert and Edith George.
Due to the untimely death of his parents, he and his siblings, along with his niece Daisy Hemmings, were raised by his sister May George, who he loved dearly. Stanley had a very full and vibrant life. He had many skills, many types of trades, and many interests.
It would be remiss not to mention his skill and great love for the game of dominoes. In 1938, he left Jamaica to work on ships in the Panama canal zone. He learned to speak fluent Spanish and was a great liaison between the Spanish speaking and English speaking workers.
Eventually, he returned to Jamaica, where he secured a bus driver position with Lindsay Bus Service in Kingston, Jamaica. During the war time, he migrated to the United States and worked on a farm in Elmira, New York as a head cook. He returned to Jamaica and in 1952 came back with his wife Monica to the United States, where he held a variety of jobs.
He also spent 5 years in London, England and then returned to Rochester to work as a tool and die maker for P.M. Cady Tool and Die. After 26 years of service, the company closed and he founded Club Caribbean of Rochester, New York where he was the President of the organization. Club Caribbean, in addition to being a community action group, maintained a thriving and popular night club.
Every year, the Club would celebrate Jamaica Independence with an extravagant and elegant Independence Ball. Stanley was in charge of securing entertainment from Jamaica, such as Byron Lee and the Dragonaires, Hugh Hendricks and the Buccaneers, to name a few. Different dignitaries would attend each year, from the Counsel General to the Ambassador from Jamaica.
Stanley took pride in all of his roles in life, husband, father, son, uncle, grandfather, brother, businessman, and friend. People were important to him, he was able to help so many people in their lives. For this he was recognized by Jamaican Orders of Societies of Honour with the Officer of the Order of Distinction (OD) for rendering outstanding and important services to Jamaica, or to distinguished citizens of a country other than Jamaica.
He leaves to cherish his memories his daughter, Merle Grier of Rochester, New York; his sons, Ronald Williams of Rochester, New York and Earl (Jenell) Singletary of Charlotte, North Carolina; his granddaughters: Stacie Williams, Erika (Jerald) Dixon, and Tamu Brown-Hutchinson; his grandson, Geraldd (Casey) Williams; his great-grandchildren: Mahniqah, Mahjari, Makenna and Marjani Hutchinson, Allen Flowers, Geraldd II, Shakeela, and Autumn Williams and Amber Hill; his great great grandson, Jahlil Woods; a dear nephew, Linval George; and his grand niece, Sophia George, as well as a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and dear friends. He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Monica; daughters, Hertensia Henry of Jamaica and Denise George-Quash; his siblings, Linton, Aston, Guy, Cleveland, Vincent, and Hughey George; and his dear sisters, May George and Cynthia Watson. May his soul rest in peace and a light perpetually shine before him.
Visitation will be Friday November 9th 10am -11am followed by memorial services at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, 50 W. Strawbridge Ave. , Melbourne, FL. As an expression of sympathy, memorial contributions may be sent to Holy Trinity Episcopal Church Elder Care Ministry, 1830 S. Babcock Street.
