OBITUARY Ted Troy April 27, 1939 – November 23, 2018 From our hero to our guardian angel… Edward R. (Ted) Troy, 79, of Dallas, TX, passed away on November 23, 2018, surrounded by his loving family. Ted was born April 27, 1939, in Providence, RI, to Mark A. Troy, Sr., and Mary Burns Troy. The third of eight children, Ted graduated from Jesuit College Preparatory School of Dallas in 1957.
He attended the University of Texas for one year and then transferred to Vanderbilt University in Nashville, TN, to join the love of his life, Sharon Ligon Troy. They married on June 11, 1960, and he graduated from Vanderbilt in 1961 with a BA degree in History. After his graduation, Sharon and Ted moved to Dallas, TX, where Ted worked as a buyer with Sanger Harris department store.
He began his long and distinguished insurance career in 1965 when he accepted a position with Provident Mutual Life Insurance Company. After six years, Ted had the opportunity to join Shelton and Bowles, Inc., where he helped build the business, through various mergers, into the largest independent insurance agency in North Texas, McQueary Henry Bowles Troy (MHBT). Ted earned his Chartered Life Underwriter (CLU) certification and was a life member of the Million Dollar Round Table, qualifying for 47 years.
During his 50-year career in the insurance business, Ted earned awards and accolades and served as a respected mentor in the industry. He retired from the insurance business in December 2015. Sharon and Ted raised four children who were a constant of pride and joy.
Ted was a loving, generous father, and his children are forever grateful for his guiding presence in their lives. Ted had many passions including golf, travel, movies, and the mountains of Crested Butte, CO. Ted was an avid fan of Dallas professional sports.
Sharon and Ted have been Dallas Mavericks season ticket holders since the beginning of the franchise in 1980 and were honored at half time of a game in February 2015. Known affectionately as Pop by his ten grandchildren, he was a proud and involved grandfather. Frequent family gatherings and trips with all twenty family members were when he was the happiest.
Ted is survived by his life-long love and wife of 58 years, Sharon; his children, Kathleen Troy Scott (Tom), Kevin Troy (Lisa), Julie Troy Shannon (Rick), and Stephanie Troy Kappel (Jason); and his beloved grandchildren: Caroline, Allison, and Shannon Scott; Savannah and Owen Troy; RJ, Kyle, and Molly Shannon; and Mallory and Tyler Kappel. The family will receive visitors on Friday, November 30th, from 6:00-8:00 pm, at Sparkman/Hillcrest Funeral Home. The Funeral Mass will be held on Saturday, December 1st, at 2:00 pm, at Christ the King Catholic Church, 8017 Preston Road, Dallas, followed by interment in Hillcrest Memorial Park and reception at Sparkman/Hillcrest Funeral Home.
