Obituary for The Honorary Colin Siefert Mayers The Honorable Colin Seifert Mayers, of Newcastle, St. John, Barbados, WI passed away unexpectedly on April 6, 2018 in Miami, FL. He was 75 years old. Colin is survived by his wife Elicia Mayers (née Irish); daughters Jeannine Mayers and Sonja Darby; son-in-law Keith Darby; grandson Austin Darby; sisters Enid Worrell, Patricia Mayers-Harris and Carnetta Innis; brothers Anthony Mayers, Trevor Mayers, and Denys Shepherd; sisters-in-law Christine Mayers, Urleen Mayers, and Patricia Mayers; brother-in-law Oswald Inniss.
He is preceded in death by his parents Cecil Mayers and Winifred Urline Mayers; his sister Sylvia Jones; brother Robert Mayers; and brothers-in-law Alexander Harris and Henry Jones. Colin was born on November 1, 1942 in Newcastle, St. John, Barbados, WI to Cecil and Urline Mayers. He was a proud graduate of the Lodge School in St John, Barbados, where he received his secondary education; the Academy of Aeronautics in Flushing New York and Embry Riddle Aeronautical University, Daytona Beach, Florida, where he acquired his commercial pilot’s license in 1970.
Colin worked in several areas in the field of aviation prior to serving as the Barbados’ Consul General at Miami from May to December 1994 and then from July 2008 until his passing on April 6, 2018. Colin started his aviation career with BWIA International Airways before serving as Pilot/Vice President Administration – Member of the Board with Carib West Airways, based at Miami, Florida and later served as General Manager – North American Operations for Caribbean Air Cargo Limited. He was also Vice President of North American Operations for Caribbean Motor Works and a consultant with his own company in various airline cargo and passenger operations in the Caribbean region.
As Consul General of Barbados at Miami, he represented Barbados in the jurisdictions of Arkansas, Alabama, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Tennessee, Texas, the Carolinas – North and South, as well as Florida. In all areas he, together with his staff, worked to develop economic, commercial, scientific and cultural relations and to safeguard the interests of Barbadians, resident and visiting, in the states within his jurisdiction. It was under the watch of Colin Mayers as Consul General that a Barbadian expo known as “Barbados Comes To” was started on Amelia Island and then successfully executed in several locations; namely Charleston, South Carolina; West Palm Beach, Florida; Atlanta, Georgia; and Tampa, Florida, attracting thousands of visitors from the USA, Barbados and beyond on each occasion.
