Thelma Alice Meier, 103 a long-time resident of Bellevue, IA and Bethany Home in Dubuque, IA entered Heaven’s gates on December 18, 2018. Thelma was born April 27, 1915 in Bellevue, IA to Roy and Anna Cheney. After graduating from Bellevue High School in 1932, she earned her beauty license in Chicago, IL and then opened her own beauty shop in Bellevue.

Later in life, she worked in Bellevue’s Elementary School cafeteria for many years. She was a long time and very active member of the Bellevue Presbyterian Church and Eastern Star. Thelma was also a great “cooker” according to her grandkids.

She loved to dance, golf, bowl, travel, and play cards. She enjoyed spending time with family and friends. She was also a big Chicago Cubs fan.

She loved to watch and root them on. Over the years, she indicated she wasn’t going anywhere until the Cubs won a World Series. God answered that prayer allowing her to see them win the 2016 World Series at the age of 101.

Thelma was united in marriage to Urban N. Meier on September 2, 1939 in Dubuque, Iowa. He preceded her in death on April 7, 2001. They were married for 61 wonderful years.

After retirement, they wintered in Mesa, AZ for many years. Thelma’s family include her oldest son Lynn (Mary) from East Dubuque, IL, her twin sons; Douglas (Debbie) from Casa Grande, AZ, and Dean from Mesa, AZ. Her family included nine loving grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, plus one on the way, and one sister, Lois (Ron) Petesch from Hopkins, MN (formally from Hanover, IL).

Thelma was predeceased in death by her parents, Roy and Anna Cheney, loving husband; a brother, Roger Cheney; sisters, Jeanette Rathje, Dorothy Jess, and Vivian Williams. The sisters were inseparable and coined themselves…” The Cheney Chickens”. A memorial service to celebrate Thelma’s life will be held on June 1, 2019 at the Bellevue Presbyterian Church, 503 Market Street, Bellevue, Iowa starting at 10:30 am.

We welcome all those who want to attend a “Celebration of Life and Remembrance” gathering at 9:00 am. She will be laid to rest in the Presbyterian Cemetery in Bellevue. The family wants to thank her doctors, the many nurses, and staff members from Bethany Home and Hospice who cared for Thelma.

It was their love and caring that made her life comfortable and enjoyable. We are so grateful! In lieu of flowers, a “Thelma Meier Memorial Fund” has been established.

“Be still and know that I am God”.
