Mrs. Thelma Young Knorr, of Berwick, died at Bloomsburg Health Care Center, Tuesday evening, at the age of 96. She was born December 8, 1921 in Mifflinville, the youngest child of the late Charles and Anna (Shannon) Young. She was the last surviving child of her immediate family and direct descendant of Daniel Boone’s family.

She graduated from in 1939 from the Mifflinville High School and continued to organize class reunions of Mifflinville graduates. A member of the American Legion Auxiliary for 65 years, she was also a member of the 8 & 40 for 60 years. Thelma and her husband Paul Henry Knorr, who died in 1986, were members of the Berwick Trail Blazers and enjoyed camping for 20 some years.

Mrs. Knorr worked at the Wise Potato Chip plant in Berwick for 14 years and at one time worked for the owner of the plant in his home. She also cleaned the home of Dr. and Mrs. Chopra for 13 years and attended their son’s weddings in India. She was a committee woman of the Columbia County Republicans, a post which she held for 13 years.

Recently, she retired from serving as a Columbia County Jury Commissioner, where she was employed for 24 years. A member of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church in Berwick for 13 years, she was one of the oldest members and a loyal attendee at church and all fund raising functions. In earlier years, she and her husband were benevolent leaders in the Post 11 Explorer Scouts of Fowlersville.

Having a fond memory of the Fowlersville area, she was instrumental in organizing the North Centre Township Historical Society Inc., where she was a fixture in attendance and contributions. She is survived by three sons: Larry P. Knorr and his wife Sylvia of Millville, Norman LaRue and his wife Jane Linn of Fowlersville, Chuck Knorr of Briar Creek, with whom she resided for the past 8 years with. Also, seven grandchildren; Diane Gardzalla, Christopher, Drena, Dirk, Brandyn Knorr, and Cabyn Switzer; a grandson Jeffrey C., lives in Salisbury, MA; nine great-grandchildren: Hanna, Benjamin, Whitney, Jendyn, Kale, Reece, Alexis, Reagan, and Alli.

She was preceded in death by her husband and siblings: Viola Michael, Elizabeth Shoemaker, Hazel Pennypacker, Pierce Young, and step brother, Robert C. Young. Thelma lived her life as she prayed every day, “Help us Lord to be ever mindful of the needs of others”. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent to North Centre Township Historical Society Inc., 1059 Suite 1, St. Rt.
