Obituary for Theodore Jacob Schaeffer Theodore Jacob Schaeffer, age 91, of Glendive, Montana, formerly of Sentinel Butte, North Dakota passed away on Saturday, October 13, 2018 at the Eastern Montana Veterans Home in Glendive. A Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 P.M. on Thursday, October 18, 2018 at the Silha Funeral Home in Wibaux, Montana with Reverend Rick Varnum officiating. Interment will take place at a later date.
Silha Funeral Home of Wibaux has been entrusted with the arrangements. Ted was born on July 8, 1927 in Minneapolis, Minnesota, a son of Mary Schaeffer. As an infant, he moved with his mother to the Aberdeen, South Dakota area.
He was raised there and educated in Barnard, South Dakota. As a youth, Ted worked on several ranches and farms in the Aberdeen area. He served in the United States Army during WWII in Japan.
Ted met his future wife, Melva Hamilton in the Aberdeen area and they were married in 1949. Ted was one of the first to pioneer artificial insemination of cattle in the United States, a fact that he was proud of. Ted loved rodeos and that lifestyle.
He especially loved calf roping. He also raised registered quarter horses and Charolais cattle. Ted moved his family to Wibaux in 1968 and he continued raising quarter horses and Charolais cattle.
Ted moved to Sentinel Butte, North Dakota in the late 1980’s and resided there until moving the Eastern Montana Veterans Home in Glendive in July of 2017. Ted enjoyed leather working and opened his own boot, shoe and saddle repair shop called the Latigo in the 1980’s. He made a lot of fine leather products such as bullwhips, belts, halters and all things related to horses.
He was also known for braiding leather. Ted made and repaired tarps for the local farmers, ranchers and anyone who needed one. One of his greatest enjoyments was to attend local brandings where he could ride and rope.
Most of all Ted loved his family and will be missed by all who knew him. Ted is preceded in death by his mother, Mary and his wife, Melva. Ted is survived by his daughters, Penny Obrigewitch of Wibaux and Shelly Easton and a son, Lenny Schaeffer of Dickinson, North Dakota.
