Thomas Alben Myers, age 88, of Butler, PA, passed away Sunday, November 25, 2018, due to complications from dementia. He was born on January 25, 1930, in Verona, PA, the son of the late Thomas K. and Grace M. Myers. He spent his childhood in Prospect, PA, and graduated from Butler High School in 1948.
Tom served in the US Navy from 1948 to 1952, attaining the rank of Machinist Mate Third Class, and was a veteran of the Korean War. He was a long-time member of the American Legion post 417 in Prospect, where he helped organize the annual Memorial Day parade in Prospect. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and also served on the committee that developed and placed the Korean War Memorial in Diamond Park in Butler.
Tom was employed for 35 years at Armco Steel, working as an electrician on the Hot Mill Maintenance Staff. He retired in 1992. He and the family were members of the St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Butler for many years.
But later he and Maxine returned to Tom’s childhood congregation at The Presbyterian Church of Prospect, where they have been members for the past 20 years. Tom was an avid hunter and fisherman, and served as a Deputy Game Protector for the Pennsylvania Game Commission in the 1960’s and 70’s. He was a fifty-year member of the Free and Accepted Masons, Victory Lodge 694, and the Syria Shriners.
On February 26, 1953, he married Gloria Maxine Scott Myers, and they raised four children in Butler. He is survived by his wife; his children Douglas S. (Kathy) Myers of Hampstead, NC; Thomas J. (Thomas Sullivan) Myers of Snow Hill, MD; Nancy R. (Craig) McMillen of North Washington, PA; eight grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and his brother Dale K. Myers of Felicity, OH. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son Mark S. Myers; two brothers Richard M. Myers and David K. Myers.
Family and friends will be received on Wednesday, Nov. 28, 2018 from 2-4pm and 6-8pm at the Edward L. Raisley Funeral Home, 387 Main Street, Prospect. A Masonic Service will be 6pm at Wednesday’s visitation.
The funeral service will be on Thursday, Nov. 29, 2018, 11am, with additional viewing from 10am to time of service, at The Presbyterian Church of Prospect, 115 Church Street, Prospect, with his church pastor, Rev. Steve Cort, officiating.
