OBITUARY THOMAS EARL MASSEY III June 13, 1945 – December 17, 2018 Thomas Earl Massey, III, passed away Monday, December 17, 2018, in San Diego, California at Sharp Memorial Hospital after a brief illness. Mr. Massey was born June 13, 1945 in Washington, DC, to Thomas Earl Massey, Jr. of Morrilton, AR, and Eva Catherine Williams Massey of Washington, DC. Tom grew up in Morrilton, AR, and attended the University of Arkansas where he was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity.
He began his career in sales and marketing at American Airlines, but spent the majority of his career in media and advertising sales, working for the CBS affiliates in Seattle and San Diego as well as the NBC affiliate in San Diego. A passionate golfer all his life, he was a member of The Century Club in San Diego, the non-profit organization that operates San Diego’s PGA tour event, and eventually became the director of sales. Tom also did work for the U.S. Open at Torrey Pines and the San Diego Chargers.
He was preceded in death by an infant daughter Merryn Nicole Massey in 1991 and a beloved son, Braden Thomas Massey of San Diego, in 2015. He is survived by a son, Turner Williams Massey, of Dallas, TX; a sister, Kaye Massey Bass of Richmond, VA; his former wife, Sharon Reddick Massey of San Diego, CA; and nieces Lauren Bass Elam of West Palm Beach, FL, Janie Bass Muñoz of Richmond, VA, and nephews, Ryan Thomas Bass of Salisbury, MD, and John Dosson Bass of Fayetteville, AR. When his boys were growing up, Tom was very involved with Solana Beach Little League, coaching for a number of years and active on the board of directors.
He was a long time member of Lomas Santa Fe Country Club as well as the San Diego Advertising Golf Association. He loved his time on the golf course and watching sports of all kinds, particularly when his sons were involved. Tom was known by his friends for his humor and quick wit and outgoing and affectionate nature.
He would want to acknowledge his many long time friends for their friendship and support, including Ron Justiss, Jim Ferguson, and Bobby ton. A memorial service will be held at Solana Beach Presbyterian Church in Solana Beach, CA, in early January.
