Thomas J Critchley June 30, 2018 – December 25, 2018 Share this obituary Sign Guestbook| Send Private Condolences| Send Sympathy Card Mr. Thomas “Tom” Critchley died peacefully on December 25, 2018 surrounded by his loving family at the age of 90. Tom is survived by his beloved wife Dolores of 66 years; his children and their spouses Thomas and Janet Critchley, Marianne and Jeff Schobel and Jill and Bob Weber; his nine loving grandchildren Thomas, Katelyn, Conner, Ryan, Robert, Brian, Jack, Erin and Marie; brother and sisters in law James and Barbara Critchley, Joseph and Dorothy Critchley and Michael and Dolores Critchley, and many nieces, nephews and friends. Tom was predeceased by his parents John and Helen and his Brothers John and Francis.

Tom was born in 1928 Newark N.J. to John and Helen Critchley. During World War II Tom enlisted in the US Army and served with distinction as a combat paratrooper with the Eleventh Airborne Division. He was trained for the possible invasion of the Japanese homeland and became part of the occupation troops from 1945 to 1947.

Tom was honorably discharged from the Army after receiving his Army of Occupation and World War II victory medals. Tom spent 32 years with the Newark Police Department rising to the rank of Deputy Chief at his retirement. Tom finished first in each of his Police promotional exams.

Tom attended Northwestern University as a member of the Newark police department’s Training Bureau in 1963 and completed his course there with distinction. After retiring from the Newark Police Department, Tom enrolled in Seton Hall University Law School in 1975 and graduated Cum Laude together with his son Thomas in 1979. after law school Tom served as General Counsel to the NJ Highway Authority until his retirement in 1994 Following his retirement, Tom loved spending time with his family in Sea Girt and also enjoyed playing golf with his friends and spending time with his crew at the Atlantic Club.

A viewing is scheduled for Friday December 28 from 4-8 PMat Reilly Bonner Funeral Home in Belmar NJ. A funeral mass is scheduled for Saturday December 29 at 10 am at St. Mark’s Church, Sea Girt. In lieu of flowers please make donations to the Disabled American Veterans fund.
