Thomas’ Obituary Tom Hinrichsen, 77, of Hiawatha, formerly of Anamosa and Sigourney, IA, died Thursday, May 30, 2019 at the Hiawatha Care Center. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 10:30 am Monday, June 10, 2019 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Anamosa. Burial will be in Holy Cross Cemetery, Anamosa.
The family will greet friends from 4 to 7 pm Sunday, June 9, 2019 at the Goettsch Funeral Home, Anamosa. Thoughts, memories and condolences may be shared with them by using the Guestbook link to the left Thomas Theodore Hinrichsen was born June 29, 1941 in Morley, IA the son of Benhart and Grace (Patnode) Hinrichsen. He graduated from Morley High School in 1959.
He then attended and graduated from Paris Academy of Hair Styling. On September 22, 1962 he married Sharon Peterson. During their 18 years of marriage they raised five children together.
Tom owned and operated two hair styling salons in Anamosa and Monticello and after 20 years he sold the business and became a Substance Abuse Counsellor for multiple agencies in Ottumwa, IA. The couple later divorced. On November 12, 1984 he married Janet Griffith and gained four more children.
The couple lived in Sigourney and raised and showed Quarter Horses. Janet preceded him in death in 2014. Tom was member of the church and also a member of the American Quarter Horse Association, 4H, Anamosa Rotary, and the Anamosa Chamber of Commerce.
He was a former member of the Anamosa City Council and also coached in the Jaycees Little League. He was a member of Alcoholic Anonymous since April 22, 1974 and had celebrated 45 years of sobriety. He enjoyed bowling, golfing, go karts, cutting wood, boating, mowing his lawn, driving tractors, NASCAR, the Iowa Hawkeyes – especially basketball, music, dancing and shooting pool.
He loved his many pets – especially his horses, and spending time with his family and friends. He is survived by his children Ted Hinrichsen, Cedar Rapids, Robin (Dane) Wheeler, Port Charlotte, FL, Theresa (Steve) Harrison, Cedar Rapids, Marcy (Mark) Clark, Cedar Rapids, Ben (Missy) Hinrichsen, Anamosa, Suzanne (Ron) Garrels, Farson, IA, Ted (Sammy) Criswell, South English, IA Becky Criswell, Fairfield, IA and Kim Criswell, Danville, IA, 29 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. In addition to his wife he was preceded in death by his parents and a great grandson Keaton Garrels.
The family wish to express their thanks to the staff of the Hiawatha Care Center for the loving care Tom received. In lieu of flowers, memorials in his honor can be made to the Hiawatha Care Center or to Alcoholics Anonymous.
