Obituary of Troy White Troy Michael “Mickey” White, of Vinton went home to be with the Lord, and claim his promised resurrection on Saturday, December 15, 2018. Mickey was born in Wytheville, VA on October 24, 1937 a son of the late Troy and Hazel Smith White. Surviving are his wife of 58 years, Norma (who was a wonderful Pastor’s wife), daughter, Cindy (Clay) Hodges; son, Michael; grandsons, Michael Eugene and Aidan Patrick White; brother, Gene (Betty) White and nieces, nephews and cousins and their families.

Mickey graduated from Jefferson High School in 1956 and later from Roanoke College. He was a second career Pastor who answered God’s call, and took early retirement from Eli Lilly and Company as Traffic and Logistic Manager to go into the ministry. He was a graduate of Duke Divinity School’s five years course of study for United Methodist Pastors, and served numerous pastorates in Floyd County, Montgomery County, and Bedford County.

His last appointment was Parrish Chapel United Methodist Church in Bedford County where he served for 15 years. Mickey was instrumental in starting the Back Pack Program for hungry children at Stewartsville Elementary School. This program sends food home with students for the weekend.

Many congregation members from different churches in the area still participate in this important program. Mickey also started the foodbank program at Parrish Chapel where church congregaton members jumped in to get food to the needy on a monthly basis. The congregation also cooks a hot meal for the receipients once a month.

A clothes closet is also provided for those in need, and is staffed by a very energetic lady and helper to provide beautiful used clothing. Another local mission that Mickey was instrumental in getting started was a prayer bead ministry. Prayer beads are put together with seven prayers and taken to the Cancer Center for cancer patients to use in their daily prayer times.

At this time, over 18,000 prayer beads have been made and distributed by the members of the congregation. The family would like to offer their special thanks to the Blue Ridge Cancer Care staff and the wonderful staff on 10 South (Palliative Care) at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital. In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorials be made to the American Cancer Society.

Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday, December 18, 2018 at Northview United Methodist Church with Pastors Jeff Wilson, Louis Strickler, and Doug Sasser officiating. Interment will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Monday, December 17, 2018 at Simpson Funeral Home 5160 Peters Creek Road.
