Velma Colleen Olmstead of Roseau, MN passed away Tuesday, February 19, 2019 at Elim Nursing Home, Fargo ND at age 85. Velma was born October 16th 1933 in Roseau, MN, to Torkel and Marie (Foss) Nyland. She graduated from Roseau High School.

She married Manley on May 15, 1953. They had three children, Kevin, Valerie, and Dianne. She made her career as head cook in the Roseau School System.

She and Manley enjoyed RVing in Arizona, and Texas during the winter; and traveling on bus tours with the Northern Neighbors Club and attending polka fests. Volunteering at church and making lefse were her favorite pastimes. Traveling to Norway to visit relatives was a memorable experience for her and Manley.

Velma spoke fluent Norwegian, loved playing piano, and was in a bowling league. Velma is survived by her husband Manley; children, Kevin (Devra) Olmstead, Valerie (Marty) Hesse, and Dianne (Dan) Hedlund; seven grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren; her sister, Helen Kompelien; sister in law, Donna Mullinex; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; uncle, Julius Foss; sister, Diana; brothers, Lenny and Norris; sister in law, Valerie Nyland; and brother in law, Kermit Kompelien.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, February 25, 2019 at 11 AM at Messiah Lutheran Church in Roseau. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will be at the Malung Cemetery at a later date.

Memorials are preferred to the “Walk To Remember” Roseau Chapter.
