Verna H. Kernstock, age 99, went to be with her Lord on April 17, 2018. Verna was born on January 6, 1919, in Bay City, Michigan. She was preceded in death by her parents Oscar and Anna Schmidt; husband Alfred (Rex) Kernstock, of 68 years; siblings Howard (Marge) Schmidt, Russell (Marian) Schmidt, Florence (Lyle) Wilt, Harold Ruthig, Alvin (Meta) Kernstock, and Wilma (Elmer) Arnold.

Verna is survived by siblings Helen Ruthig, Dorothy Hammerbacher, Marie (Norm) Hoerauf, and Don (Lucy) Schmidt. She will be deeply missed by daughter Bonnie (Rudy) Avila; granddaughters Ashley (Dan) Zevalkink and Alisha (Jon) Davis; great-grandsons Rudy, Rex and Ryder Zevalkink; godchildren Sharon Meisel, Thomas Kernstock, Carol Cole, Shelby King, Joyce Andrzjewski, Stephanie Arthel, Jerry Hammerbacher, Bob Hoerauf and Marcia Bacon; and many nieces and nephews. Verna was an accomplished athlete.

She won ten championship golf tournaments in Michigan and two in Florida and two holes in one. She loved to garden, knit and crochet and stained glass. In 1986 Verna and Rex moved to Ocala, Florida returning to Michigan in 2008.

She was a member of Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Jenison, Michigan. Cremation has taken place. A celebration Memorial will take place at Holy Cross Lutheran Church, 1481 Baldwin Street, Jenison, Michigan on April 26th at 10:30 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to: St. Paul Lutheran, 6094 WS Saginaw Road (M 84), Bay City, Michigan or Hospice of North Ottawa Community NOCHS, 1309 Sheldon Road, Grand Haven, Michigan 49417.

Verna’s ashes will be laid to rest next to her husband’s at Fort Custer National Cemetery in Augusta, Michigan to be held at a later date.
