Vernon G. Monken April 09, 1922 – February 11, 2019 Share this obituary Send Flowers Sign Guestbook| View Guest Book Entries Vernon George Monken, age 96 of O’Fallon, born April 9, 1922 in Shiloh Valley Township, Ill. , died Monday evening, February 11, 2019 at his residence at The Colonnade, O’Fallon. Vernon grew up in Shiloh and graduated from Belleville Township High School.

He served abroad as a Seabee in the US Navy during World War II. After the war he began his long career with Refrigeration Supplies, Inc., where he worked for 40 years. He was a longtime member of the VFW, serving as Post Commander.

Vernon was involved in his community, serving as O’Fallon Township Trustee 2001-2005, and on O’Fallon City Council 1993-1997, where he was instrumental in the design and construction of the current City Hall. He also served on the Property and Public Works Committees. He was a member of Enterprise Grange, American Legion Post 137, the O’Fallon Sportsmen’s Club, Refrigeration Service Engineers, O’Fallon Senior Citizens, and was an 81-year member of the O’Fallon First United Methodist Church.

After retirement, Vernon often volunteered at the O’Fallon Food Pantry. He was preceded in death by his wife Marie, nee Fohne, Monken, parents Albert and Amelia, nee Haury, Monken; his brother Elton (Genivee) Monken, and brother-in-law Adam Landry. Surviving are his son Douglas (Nancy) Distler of O’Fallon, daughter Cindy (Michael) Drury of O’Fallon; sister Marilyn Landry of O’Fallon; grandchildren Scott Distler of Orlando, Fla.

, Steven (Linda) Distler of Glenview, Ill. , Lyndsy (Thomas) Kaminski of O’Fallon, Alex (Ashley) Drury of Arnold, Mo. , and Paul (Elizabeth) Drury of Swansea, Ill.

; great-grandchildren Jack, Lauren, Taylor, Xander, Logan, and Hailey, and several nieces and nephews. Memorial donations are suggested to O’Fallon First United Methodist Church, O’Fallon Food Pantry, or to VFW Post 805. Visitation: The family will receive friends 5 – 8 p.m., Sunday, February 17, 2019 at O’Fallon First United Methodist Church, 504 E. Highway 50, O’Fallon, Ill.

, and from 9:00 – 9:45 am, Monday, February 18, 2019 at the church. The Senior Citizens’ Club of O’Fallon will conduct a walk-through with a Prayer at 6:30 pm, Sunday, at the church. Funeral: 10 a.m., Monday, February 18, 2019 at the church with Rev.

Don Long officiating. Burial with military honors will follow at O’Fallon City Cemetery, O’Fallon, Ill.
