Obituary for Viergina Backer Print Mrs. Viergina Petit-Frère Backer was born on October 8th, 1927 in Port Margot, Haiti to Perceus Petit-Frère, a Farmer, and Ageli Petit-Homme, an Entrepreneur/Seamstress. She was 3rd of six children. Viergina had a memorable journey and fulfilled life.

She followed the footsteps of her parents and became an Entrepreneur/Seamstress. She learned how to sew from the skillful hands of her mother; which in later years, her two daughters, Fenia and Felina, also became seamstresses themselves. Viergina attended Ecole Adventiste de Port Margot for her primary and secondary school.

She spent most of her life committed to being a wife, a mother, and a servant of God. She was always excited about the word of God and enjoyed spreading the gospel to others by becoming a Colporteur. If you stopped to visit her at anytime, she always had one thing to say: “Jesus is coming soon”.

Viergina found love in 1958 in Fernand Jean Baptiste Backer; both fell in love and later married in February 1960. Together, they brought into this world six children: Frantz, Felix, Firmin, Fenia, Farnel & Felina. She adored her children and often recited their names from the eldest to the youngest until her last breath.

As an entrepreneur, Viergina and her late husband opened and managed a department store in Cap-Haitien, called Bargain Shop. There, she used her dressmaking skills to design and manufacture beautiful outfits for her clients. In pursuit of the American dream, Viergina migrated to the United States in 1970.

Soon after, her beloved husband followed suit. Upon her arrival in the states, she wasted no time and went on to work in order to provide for the beloved children she left behind. Because of her devotion to her children, she couldn’t bear to be without them.

In 1981, they joined her to live permanently in the United States. Viergina was a selfless, hardworking, submissive, yet a very opinionated woman. She was such a wonderful wife and mother that her husband dubbed her the name “A Gift from God”.

She agreed most of the times with her husband; however, she did not skip a beat to let him know when he was wrong. She was creative, graceful and had a simplistic beauty. Viergina never wore make up.

Her belief was “natural beauty does not need embellishment”. Despite her calm demeanor, she was a disciplinarian and scolded her children whenever they were out of line. Viergina was a God-fearing woman who embodied a healthy living lifestyle as a strict vegetarian.

She was a fervent member of the Seventh Day Adventist (SDA) faith. As a SDA Christian, she was driven by her commitment to give, serve her community and spreading the gospel of Jesus Christ. She and her late husband worked tirelessly to instill Christian values in their children.

Viergina believed that education was the cornerstone to achieving success in life. Viergina is described by her family as a kind and gentle spirit, dedicated wife, committed, and passionate mother. She lived a simple and peaceful life of faith, truth, service to others, and worshiped with her husband and family daily.

Her life-long dream is for all of her children to go to heaven. On February 1, 2019 at 2pm, Mrs. Viergina Backer expired at Brookdale Hospital, at the age of 91, in the presence of her children, departing from this earthly dwelling. She now awaits the second coming of her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

Viergina Backer outlived her five siblings. She is survived by her six children, ten grandchildren and countless nieces and nephews. Mommy has left us; she lived an exemplary life, and for that, she will forever be cherished.

‘Till we meet again, mommy. At the family’s request: Should you desire, the family has designated Making the Impossible Possible, Inc., (MIPO) for memorial contributions. MIPO hosts annual summer camps for children exposing them to various creative arts, education, health and business workshops.
