Virginia “Ginger” Belanger Johnson, 76, died on Monday, March 11, 2019 at her home in Charleston. A memorial service will be held at 11 o’clock on Thursday, March 14, 2019 at St. Andrews Parrish UMC, 3225 Ashley River Rd. , Charleston, SC 29414.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Ginger’s memory may be made to Planned Parenthood (plannedparenthood.org). Ginger was born on March 25, 1942 in Fall River, Mass. , daughter of the late Doris May Belanger and the late Albert Belanger.

Once she adopted Charleston as her family’s home, she received advanced degrees in Social Work from The College of Charleston and University of South Carolina, raising four daughters as a single parent while working full-time as a social worker, clinical supervisor, and cognitive and behavioral therapist. During her long career, she worked at Charter Hospital, Fenwick Hall Hospital, the South Carolina Department of Mental Health, and from 1997 to 2016 as a clinical supervisor and therapist at the Charleston Dorchester Mental Health Center. Her family is grateful for the legacy of strength, compassion for others, political activism, and social justice she left each of us.

These gifts will live on in our family through generations. Ginger is survived by four daughters, Caryn Colucci and Kristin Cole of Charleston, Kelly Love Johnson of Charlotte, and Katie Johnson Ross of Hilton Head; five grandchildren, Keri Spohn Martin, Lauren Cole, Amanda Spohn and Caitlin Cole of Charleston and Connor Ross of Hilton Head; son-in-law Mark Ross of Hilton Head, grandson-in-law Timothy Martin of Charleston, and three great-grandchildren: Jada James, Jolie Martin and Brielle Martin of Charleston.
