OBITUARY W. Odelle Yates January 14, 1927 – September 29, 2018 W. Odelle Yates, 91, went to be with the Lord while surrounded by her family on September 29, 2018 after a courageous battle with dementia and other complications. She was born January 14, 1927 to Willis W. Large and Susan I. Large in Grand Oak, AL. Baptized at the age of 16 in a lake behind her home of a classmate and friend, she graduated from Fyffe, AL High School in 1945.

Upon graduation, she attended the Nurse Cadet Program at Holy Name of Jesus Hospital, Gadsen, AL, a program that was unfortunately discontinued due to the War. Odelle was employed by Blue Cross-Blue Shield of Florida (now FL Blue) and retired in 1982. She then taught Bible at Grace Christian Academy from 1982-1992.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, daughter, Debbie Holcombe, stepdaughter, Donna Lynn Charles, sister, Billie Jo and brother-in-law, Gene Smith. She is survived by her husband of 45 years, Robert; stepson, Douglas (Patti); grandson, Douglas and Jacob Yates (Natalie); granddaughter, Catherine “Cami” Yates; three great-grandsons, Elijah, Logan and Christian Yates as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins. The family wishes to express their gratitude to Community Hospice and Palliative Care personnel, nursing staff at Avante of Jax Beach, and employees of Home Instead Senior Care who assisted in home care.

All were a real blessing. The visitation will be held from 6-8 pm Friday, Oct 5th at Odelle’s church, Maranatha Baptist, 2927 Leon Rd. Jax, FL.

The funeral will follow at the church at 11am Saturday, Oct 6th with Senior Pastor Richard Simmons presiding. Contributions may be made to Maranatha Baptist Church, 2927 Leon Rd. , Jax, FL 32246 or to Community Hospice and Palliative Care, 4266 Sunbeam Rd.
