Memorials may be given to Kimball Baptist Fellowship or Kimball Health Services. The services for Walt have been entrusted to the Cantrell Funeral Home. Walter Lee Wann was born in Kutch, Colorado on October 1, 1924, the son of Robert and Lucille (Ververs) Wann.
He received his early education in Colorado and later graduated from the Kimball High School. He enlisted in the US Navy and served his country from 1943-1947, during which time he was stationed in Perth Australia. After being discharged he drove cattle and hay trucks for his father.
He was married to Dolores Sater in Raton, New Mexico on March 11, 1950 and to this union Walt, Jr., James and Renee were born. The family lived in Limon and Ft. Morgan, Colorado and Walt worked in the oil field.
They moved to Kimball, NE in 1955 and he continued to work in the oil field as a driller. Later in life he worked part time jobs at Cabela’s, George Risk Industries and even driving a beet truck for his son-in-law Jim. There was a time when Walt struggled with alcohol, and when he was 59 years old, two men from AA took him to treatment in Scottsbluff and he recently celebrated 34 years of sobriety.
Walt in turn helped many alcoholics to reach and keep their sobriety, whether lending an ear or telling them of his own experience or driving folks hundreds of miles to treatment. He had a great sense of humor and even at the end he could make the nurses laugh. He will be dearly missed.
The family would like to extend a “Special Thank You” to Mark and Mardi Davies, Terry and Vera Jones and Pastor Dennis Payton for the care that they provided to Walt which allowed him to stay at his home. Survivors include his son Jim Wann of Henderson, CO; daughter Renee (Jim) Buskirk of Hemingford, NE; sister Patricia (Les) Arfsten of Leoti, KS; 9 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, son Walt Wann, Jr., brothers Harvey, Charles and Rex; sisters Louise and Emma Lou.
