Walter Wayne Mack, 86 of Champaign passed onto Heaven at 1:25 p.m. on Thursday, December 27, 2018 while a resident at Helia Healthcare of Champaign. Funeral services will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Wednesday, January 2, 2019 at Renner-Wikoff Chapel in Urbana. Pastor Michael Mack will officiate.

Burial will take place at Roselawn Cemetery in Champaign. A visitation will be held prior to the funeral from 10:30 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Walter was born on August 6, 1932 in Urbana to Albert Allen and Hannah (Keagle) Mack.

Due to hardships of his family Walter was raised by his Aunt Grace and Uncle Walt Kelmick. Walter was preceded in death by his parents and the aunt and uncle who raised him, six brothers and one sister. He is survived by many nieces, nephews and friends.

Walter graduated from Champaign High School where he played basketball and baseball. He served in the United States Navy for four years (1951-1955) as an Aviation Metalsmith 2C with Patrol Squadron 49 working on Sea Planes. In 1955 Walter was the last Steam Engine Fireman hired on the Illinois Central Railroad Champaign Division.

He worked 45 years as a Fireman and Engineer, retiring as number one in seniority. Walter loved musicals, stage plays and dinner theater. He was a life time Chicago White Sox and Illini fan.

He took quite a few bus trips around the country plus had visited all the main land states. Walter was a very caring and giving person who loved life and doing for others. He will be missed.
