Obituary for Wendell L. Sewell Wendell Leon Sewell Wendell was born February 10, 1933 in the small town of Durant, OK. Siblings include George, Wanda, Betty (deceased) and several half-siblings, including Jay B and Thurman. All four brothers proudly served in the Armed Forces.

His father, Artimus, was tragically murdered when Wendell was just a child. His loving mother, Della, passed away in 1980. Wendell grew up playing sports from the time he was old enough to throw a ball, through his time served in the Air Force, beginning in 1951, during the Korean War.

He was a star pitcher in high school and excelled in football and basketball as well. The St. Louis Cardinals were scouting him before he joined the Air Force. He received an honorable discharge in 1955 and received the National Defense Service Medal and Good Conduct Medal.

A man of many talents (he would laugh at that of course), Wendell spent many years as a house painter, handyman, carpenter, swap meet sales, gas station service attendant, keno player, and of course, flipping cars – but not his favorite Rambler. He liked to switch it off when coasting down a long grade to save gas. Always trying to save a dime!

Wendell and his loving companion, Charlene Slemp, shared life together for 33 years enjoying each other’s company, their dogs and cats, and purchasing lottery tickets. As a dad, he spent many years raising his daughter Karen (husband Bill McPherson) whom remembers him as a fun and loving father, along with his son Ken (wife Tracy), in Redlands, CA. His other children include Diann Pierce (Clay), Elaine De Arcos, and Robert “Bobby” Matthews (deceased).

All who met him will remember that straight face he kept when telling a story – whether it was true or not. Oh, the stories he could tell! In June 2017, Wendell was admitted to the Veterans Hospital in Loma Linda, CA for palliative care.

There, he was cared for by wonderful, selfless people whom always treated him with dignity and respect. He was known by staff as “Hollywood” – a term of endearment given to him for wearing his cool sunglasses day or night, indoors. He turned 85 in February 2018 and passed away in his sleep on the morning of August 20, 2018.

Wendell knew his Lord and Savior and is now at peace, for eternity. To send flowers or a memorial gift to the family of Wendell L. Sewell please visit our Sympathy Store.
