William (Bill) George McJunkins, of Citrus Heights, California, passed away peacefully on July 24 at the age of 91. Bill was born in Boise, Idaho on December 23, 1926, to parents, Homer and Verlinda (Matthews) McJunkins. Bill fondly recalled growing up amidst wild horses and open land.

In 1945 Bill enlisted in the United States Navy. During WWII, he served as a baker on the USS Cabot (CVL-28) aircraft carrier. When the war had ended, he served on the battleship South Dakota.

For his service, he received the Victory Medal and the American Campaign Medal. Bill was honorably discharged in 1946. Back in Boise, Idaho, Bill married the love of his life, Elaine Warntjes on July 9, 1949.

In 2017, they celebrated 68 years of marriage. In the early 1950s, Bill and Elaine moved to Los Angeles where Bill attended school and received his Bachelor’s Degree in Science at Woodbury College. In 1956, they moved to Citrus Heights, California and made it their permanent home.

Bill began his career working for Sacramento County as a courtroom clerk. He was promoted to the Sacramento Superior Court as Court Clerk Supervisor. After 30 years of service, he retired in 1988.

Bill’s favorite pastime was golfing. He was known to be out on the golf course at least every other day. With the amount of hours he spent on the course Bill jokingly referred to Elaine as a “Golf Widow”.

Bill was proud to talk about his eleven holes-in-one. Bill was preceded in death by his wife Elaine, his parents, his brother Fred, and niece Karen Belknap. Bill is survived by his sister Betty (Bill) Wennstrom, and six nieces and nephews, Linda Hawkins, Thomas Green, Timothy Green, Teresa Cox, Randy Warntjes, and Linda Michael.

The family would like to thank the staff of Sunrise of Fair Oaks Assisted Living for their extraordinary care and compassion throughout Bill’s residence there, and especially during his final days. At his request, there will be no services. He will be interred at the Sacramento Valley National Cemetery in Dixon, California.
