OBITUARY Mr. William John Mitchell February 24, 1933 – January 20, 2019 Bill Mitchell went to be with God on Sunday, January 20, 2019. He struggled through the last 3 years of Leukemia, chemotherapy and heart complications. At his side as he passed onto Heaven with grace, poise, and dignity were his wife, Mary Jane Mitchell, his daughter Robin Mitchell Hee, two of his granddaughters Rachel and Christina Burns and his niece Barbara Riis.
He proudly served as a Staff Sergeant in the Korean War in the U.S. Air Force. After serving his country he went on to graduate UCLA in 1958 in business administration. From 1977 to 1985 he served as a San Diego City Councilman and twice selected to serve as Deputy Mayor in 1981 and 1985.
Notably on the San Diego City Council he helped found the first Community Alert programs in the city and the horse patrol in Balboa Park. He was known for caring about the environment and law enforcement. Mr. Mitchell was infamous for his 500 Walk; a grass roots door to door campaign asking constituents what their concerns were and asking for their votes.
Additionally, he had a long successful career as a real estate broker in La Jolla. He graduated from San Dieguito High School in 1951. Most of all he was a wonderful father, grandfather, husband, brother, son and friend.
He is survived by his wife, two children, 8 grand children, 3 great grand children and his former wife, Shirley. Bill was so thankful for the incredible care and support for him and his family from Dr. Emma Alvarado, Dr. Bruce Covner, and nurses; Jada, Lily, Joana, Donna, Archie and Lynette at Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla. Bill Mitchell’s memorial will be held at El Camino Mortuary on Wednesday, January 30th at 12:00 noon in Chapel 2 followed by his burial at 1 pm on Veteran’s Terrace at El Camino Memorial Park.
Additionally, there will be a viewing on Tuesday, January 29 4 pm to 8 pm. 5600 Carroll Canyon Road, San Diego. Celebration of life to follow the burial service.
