Obituary of William Gage Glenville – William B. Gage, 88, passed away peacefully on October 12, 2108, at the Glendale Home with his loving family by his side. The son of the late John Gage and Grace Haskins Gage, Bill was born on March 1, 1930. Bill and Edna Couture were joined in marriage September 3, 1950.
In his rambunctious early years, Bill raced stock cars at the tracks in Fonda, Saratoga and Albany areas. On one particular occasion, while at the Victoria Speedway in Dunnsville, NY, he crashed and rolled his stock car nearly sending his wife Edna, into delivery with their oldest son. Bill’s work history included the General Electric, owner /operator of Harvey Holmes Garage, head mechanic for the City of Schenectady Fire Department and mechanic for the Garrison Fire & Rescue.
Bill was an honorary member of the Schenectady Permanent Firemen’s Association. At one time, Bill was one of nine Gage men simultaneously serving the residents of the City of Schenectady – seven firefighters and two Fire Department mechanics. Bill, Edna and their family spent many years fishing, waterskiing and basking in the sun at their camp in Moffitt Beach, Lake Pleasant, NY.
Many summer vacations were also spent at Long Beach Island, NJ. Bill was an avid fisherman and hunter, He spent many weekends in the Adirondacks and made trips to Montana, Canada and Newfoundland in search of the big game. The family will always remember picnics and Sunday dinners where Bill perfected his culinary skills (even though he often had to be asked where the biscuits were and not to burn the gravy).
In addition to his wife of 68 years, Bill is also survived by his children William J. J. (Kimberly) Gage of Delanson; Donald E. (Carla) Gage of Wells; and James M. (Christine) Gage of Glenville; granddaughter Kristina M. Gage; grandsons James W. Gage and Alex J. Gage; step granddaughter Tracy Greenwood; and step great grandchildren Ryan Pomeroy and Peyton Cole. Also surviving are Bill’s brothers Donald (Patricia) Gage and Everett (Joan) Gage’ brother -in-law Joseph Couture, along with numerous nieces and nephews, cousins and friends. Calling hours, Tuesday afternoon 4:00 to 7:00 in the evening at the Daly Funeral Home, Inc., 242 McClellan St,.
Schenectady. Burial will be private at the convenience of the family. The family would like to express their gratitude and thanks to the Mohawk Trails staff of the Glendale Home, for their professionalism, dedication, care and compassion for Bill during his last 14 months.
