Zofia’s Obituary Zofia J. Kuntaras, nee Szymel, 93, of Brookfield, formerly of Cicero. Zofia was born in Berezowiec, Poland. When unrest fell upon her beloved country, Zofia and her family were shipped to Siberian camps in Russia.

She traveled to England and eventually enlisted in the Military. She served in the Polish Air Force (PAF) where she met her husband Stanley of 70 years. Together they emigrated to the U.S., raising their five children in the Chicago suburbs.

Zofia was always active in the Polish community as a PAF veteran, supporter of the Polish Scouts and helped found a Polish school in Cicero. She was an expert seamstress, loved gardening and enjoyed cooking. Zofia enjoyed life, family and the Lord.

Our family is forever grateful for all the ways she enriched our lives. Calujemy mocno. Zawsze z nami bedzesz w pamieci i w sercach.

Beloved wife of Stanislaw “Stanley” for 70 years; loving mother of Teresa Maxwell, Irena (Paul) Stransky, Jan (Rebecca), Richard (Rita) & Stanley (Mary Fran) Kuntaras; proud grandmother of Shawn (Elaine), Nicholas & Daniel Maxwell, Anneliese Rakes, Alex Stransky, Maggie Kuntaras, Jonathan Stransky, John, Allison and Matthew Kuntaras; great-grandmother of Emma and Zofia Maxwell; fond sister of Adam (the late Wanda Kasprzynska), the late Zbygniew (Jozefa) Szymel and the late Boguslawa (the late Edward) Russ; aunt of numerous nieces and nephews. Visitation Wednesday 3:00 – 8:00 p.m. at Hursen Funeral Home & Crematory, SW corner of Mannheim & Roosevelt Roads, Hillside/Westchester. Prayers 8:45 a.m. Thursday from funeral home to St. Mary of Czestochowa Church, 3010 S. 48th Court, Cicero.

Mass 10:00 a.m. Interment Queen of Heaven Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations to AMITA Health Adventist St. Thomas Hospice, P.O. Box 130, Hinsdale, IL 60522-0130.
