Alfred Eugene Turner, June 14, 1929 — December 11, 2018

Alfred’s Obituary Alfred Eugene Turner was born June 14, 1929 in Carroll County, Georgia, the son of the late Coleman Clay and Nettie Roena James Turner. He was a graduate of Russell High School in East Point, Georgia, the U.S. Maritime Service School in St. Petersburg, Florida, and Georgia State University in Atlanta. In his youth he was a merchant seaman employed by the Cleveland Cliffs Iron Company aboard the Steamship Cadillac.

Following this, he became a member of the U.S. Army Signal Corp, 314th Signal Construction Battalion, assigned to the Seventh U.S. Army during the occupation of Germany following World War II, and was awarded the National Defense Medal, Army of Occupation Medal-Germany, and Good Conduct Medal. Upon returning from Germany, he was employed by AT&T as a Telegraph Serviceman and Transmissionman in Atlanta. He was later appointed an Engineer in Cincinnati, Ohio, then a supervisor in the AT&T Plant department in Atlanta, and supervisor in the AT&T Long Lines Status Center in New York City.

He advanced to Manager in the Engineering Department and later became Product Investment Manager for Audio, Video, and Satellite Services in Atlanta. He was appointed AT&T Southern Region Network Engineering Coordinator for the divestiture of the Bell Operating Companies from AT&T in 1984. He retired from AT&T in 1986.

Following retirement, Mr. Turner became a respected genealogist and published several volumes about his and his wife’s ancestors and their descendants. He was a member of the Carroll County Genealogical Society and made a number of contributions to that society’s publication. He was a member of the Georgia Genealogical Society, founder of The Society for the Preservation of Descendants of Ancestors, and parliamentarian for the Russell High Class of ’46 Society.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Mrs. Betty Anne Cartee Turner; son, David Eugene Turner of Reston, Virginia; daughter, Anne Elizabeth (Mrs. Rand H.) Childs, Huntsville, Alabama; grandsons, Ian and Ryan Childs; nephews and nieces. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Mrs. Ruth Turner Knott, and brothers Carl, Harold Clay, and Coleman Reese Turner. A graveside service will be held at Forest Hills Memorial Gardens on Saturday, December 15, 2018 at 11:00 am.

The family will be receiving friends at the funeral home on Friday from 5pm-8pm.
