Obituary for Allen “Al” Robert Ervin Allen Robert Ervin, beloved husband, father and grandpa, 95 years-old of Roy, Utah passed away Friday, November 2, 2018 while holding the hand of his eternal companion, Blanche Cynthia Ervin. Born March 23, 1923 in Port Arthur (Thunder Bay), Ontario, Canada, Allen is survived by his wife Blanche and his children Mark Ervin of Flower Mound, Texas; Matt (Janae) Ervin of Newport, Washington; and Cindie (Tod) Schroeder of North Ogden, Utah. Allen has 10 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren.
Allen served in the US Navy as an Engineman D First Class working on assault craft engines and served in World War II. Allen fought on D-Day at Omaha Beach in Normandy, France on June 6, 1944. He was awarded the World War II Victory Medal, American Campaign Ribbon, European-African-Middle Eastern Area Ribbon with 1 Star, and the Navy Good Conduct Medal.
Allen loved sports and participated in golf, basketball, boxing and jogging. He was a Green Bay Packer and Utah Jazz fan and loved reading books and studying gospel topics. Some friends called him “Al” and others referred to him as “Big Al”.
He was well loved and made friendships that will last through the eternities. Charitable, accepting and talkative Al always made friends with everyone he met. He was truly a humble man of God, without guile and a joke or story for everyone around him.
Al worked in the Steel manufacturing industry for over 30 years. Al married Blanche Cynthia Johnson in Wauwatosa, Wisconsin on December 14, 1963. He was baptized a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on September 1, 1972 after reading the Book of Mormon and receiving a powerful answer to his prayers while working as a night shift security guard.
As he walked the docks of the business he guarded, he pondered Moroni’s promise and felt frustrated at a lack of answers to his prayers. He looked up to the heavens and said, “Well God, you blew it”. No sooner had he said it when he heard a clear voice saying, “It’s true!
” He returned home after work and announced to Blanche he was getting baptized. Allen and Blanche were baptized shortly thereafter. Allen quickly became a zealous convert to the gospel with a love for missionary work.
Allen, Blanche and their children were sealed for time and all eternity in the Salt Lake Temple on August 22, 1973.
