Almeda “Frances” (Hawkins) Baker, 96, of Greenwood, peacefully entered into eternal rest Friday, March 8, 2019 at Greenwood Village South in Greenwood, Indiana. She was born October 27, 1922 east of Paoli, Indiana, the daughter of James Bert and Dessie Mryle Hawkins. In 1945 she met and married Lawrence Wendell Baker.

After 70 years of marriage, Lawrence preceded her in death on February 17, 2017. She was a member of Lick Creek Friends Quaker Church and graduated from Lick Creek elementary and Paoli High School, May 1939 at age 16. She attended Indiana Business College in Indianapolis, and was employed as a switchboard operator and stenographer at the International Brotherhood of Carpenters Union, living at the Friends’ Church Bertha Ballard Home.

From there she was employed by John and Mary Wells where she helped as a waitress and clerk in their restaurant and filling station business. She was a member of Southport Presbyterian Church and taught many years to four and five year olds, also was Moderator of Women’s Association and attended Women’s Bible Study classes there. She was an active leader with Girl Scout meetings and was an officer in Queen Esther Chapter of the Eastern Star.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her siblings, Arel, Bertine and Robert Rex. Frances is survived by her daughter; Barbara Ann (Steve) Rineer of Colorado Springs, son; Larry Wayne (Cathy) Baker of Cincinnati, and their families, including five grandchildren and four great grandchildren. The funeral will be Monday, March 11, 2019 at 12:00 PM, at Ochs-Tetrick Funeral Home in Orleans with Brother Thomas Bostic officiating.

Burial will follow in Fairview Cemetery in Orleans. Friends are invited to visitation at the funeral home on Monday from 11:00 AM until the time of service. To send flowers or a memorial gift to the family of Almeda Frances (Hawkins) Baker please visit our Sympathy Store.
