OBITUARY Aloysius A. Germann June 22, 1920 – January 12, 2019 Aloysius Andrew Germann, 98 years old, of Dearing, GA passed away early on Saturday morning, January 12, 2019 at home. Visitation will be 9 AM – 10 AM Wednesday January 16, 2019 at the Cathedral of St. Paul in Birmingham, AL. Funeral Mass will follow at 10 AM, Bishop Robert J. Baker presiding.

Burial at Elmwood Cemetery will follow directly after the Funeral Mass. Al Germann was born in Ripley, Ohio to Anna Mary (Pfeffer) Germann and John Valentine Germann on June 22, 1920. He grew up on his family’s farm in Ripley, the youngest of 13 children and attended 1 ½ years of college before he left school to work in a relative’s local trucking business.

He married Ella Ruth (Clark) Germann on August 12, 1942. Farming was his initial occupation after he married. During WWII he enlisted in the Navy at Columbus, Ohio, February 6, 1945 and was discharged at Jacksonville, FL April 5, 1946 having served as a Pharmacist’s Mate II.

After being discharged, Al, his wife and 2 very young sons moved to his wife’s hometown of Cullman, AL where he began again working in the trucking business. In 1950 he moved to Birmingham where he spent the next 37 years in the truck/freight business. He was an active devout Catholic all his life and a member of the Knights of Columbus, (Third Degree, since age 21).

In the early 70’s he applied to the Permanent Deaconate program and was ordained a Permanent Deacon March 2, 1975 at the Cathedral of St. Paul in Birmingham. He served in many varied apostolates and assignments as Deacon with the constant support of his loving and devoted wife, who died in 1998. Al’s last assignment before moving to GA was at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Ensley.

In 2012 Al moved to Dearing, GA to live with one of his sons. He was back on a farm again and in the country! He also became an assoicate member of the Alleluia Community of Augusta, GA and as a deacon he frequently took part in Church activities and services at Queen of the Angels Catholic Church in Thomson, GA, close to the town of Dearing where he lived.

His love of farming and gardening stayed with him all his life and he was an untiring worker for his God, his family and his fellow man. Aloysius A. Germann is preceded in death by his parents, his 12 siblings, his wife Ruth and 2 infant sons. He is survived by six sons: Col.

John Anthony Germann (Anne), Dr. Joseph Rene Germann (Mary), Jerome Francis Germann (Cathy), Patrick Thomas Germann (Jody, deceased), Aloysius Edward Germann (Margaret) and Vincent Paul Germann. Al is also survived by 17 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren. He will be greatly missed.
