Andrew “Andy” George Blazakis, 80, of Dublin, Ohio passed away on May 10, 2019, surrounded by family and friends after a courageous battle with cancer. Andrew was born in Ambridge, Pa on April 4, 1939 to loving parents who immigrated from Crete, Greece. He was raised in Ambridge and always spoke of this period in his life with great affection.

Even in his later years, he loved returning to his hometown to visit nostalgic locations and enjoy a hot roast beef sandwich at the Maple Restaurant. Shortly after graduating from Ambridge High School, he met the love of his life, Dolores Marie (Petcash) Blazakis, who he married on September 23, 1961, after three years of service in the US Army. Andrew retired from the General Motors Corporation in Lordstown, Ohio, in 1997, after 36 years of service.

During those years, he and his wife raised their family in Austintown, Ohio and attended St. John the Forerunner Greek Orthodox Church. Upon retirement, he worked part-time at the Mill Creek Park Golf Course in Youngstown, Ohio. In 2000, Andrew and his wife moved to Dublin, Ohio to be closer to their children.

Andrew was an active member of the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Cathedral and, in his leisure time, enjoyed watching classic movies and listening to crooners such as Frank Sinatra. He was also a student of thoroughbred horse racing and relished an afternoon watching the races. He loved all things Pittsburgh, including the Pittsburgh Steelers – however, nothing gave him more pleasure than being a loving, nurturing papou to his granddaughters.

Andrew will be remembered by all for his kind, selfless nature and strong work ethic. He is survived by his wife, his children Craig Blazakis, Valerie (Steve) Molnar, Christopher Blazakis, his grandchildren, Ashley and Abby Molnar, and his brother Dino (Mary) Blazakis of Baltimore, Md. He also had many nieces, nephews, and cousins that he loved.

He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Katherine Blazakis, sister Clara Zugliani, and brothers Nicholas (Marilyn) and Milton Blazakis. Calling hours for family and friends will be held on Friday, May 17th, from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. at the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Cathedral, 555 N. High St., Columbus, Ohio 43215, followed by a funeral service at the Cathedral and internment at Flint Union Cemetery, 8187 Flint Rd. , Columbus, Ohio 43235.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions to the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Cathedral, or the OhioHealth Kobacher House, both in Columbus, Ohio. To send flowers or a memorial gift to the family of Andrew George Blazakis please visit our Sympathy Store.
