Dominican Sister of Peace, Sister Camilla (Leonita) Smith died at Mohun Health Care Center, Columbus, OH on Monday, May 6, 2019. She was born in 1921 in Akron, OH and in 1939 entered the congregation of St. Mary of the Springs, now the Dominican Sisters of Peace. She earned her degrees from the College of St. Mary of the Springs, and Ohio State University in Home Economics and a Masters in Biblical Studies from Providence College.

She taught at Catholic Central High School in Steubenville, and in the Columbus diocese, she taught in Coshocton, Lancaster and Zanesville. She also taught at Ohio Dominican University and served as Dean of Women. She was Superior of Mohun Health Care Center, and was Director of Religious Education at Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Grove City.

She was instrumental in founding the ecological center, Shepherd’s Corner in Blacklick, Ohio where she served for nine years. She was preceded in death by her parents, Daniel and Frances Gossman Smith, her sisters, Marie Smith, Eleanor Schmeltzer, Rose Marie Paumier, Agnes Hupp, Mildred Hasser and her brothers, Philip and Daniel. She is survived by her sister Mary Frances Pitstick, her brother, Harry Smith, niecesand nephews.

A Vigil of Remembrance Service will be held at the Dominican Sisters of Peace Motherhouse Chapel, Columbus, Ohio on Thursday, May 16, 2019, 4:45 PM with the wake continuing until 7:00 p.m. The funeral liturgy will be held at the Dominican Sisters of Peace Motherhouse Chapel on Friday, May 17, 9:00 AM followed by burial at St. Joseph Cemetery.
