Mildred’s Obituary Mildred Manuel West, 84, of Lexington, KY, passed away peacefully, May 7, 2019, in the care of hospice after a short illness. Born February 7, 1935, in Langley, KY, Mildred was the eldest daughter of the late Fannie Arms Manuel and Manor Manuel. Mildred grew up in a large and loving family with eight brothers and sisters.
Mildred married Jack L. West on September 4, 1963, and together they shared forty-nine years of memories before Jack passed away in 2012. Mildred was preceded in death by her son, Stephan “Reno” West; her grandson, Michael Allen; her brother, Willard Manuel; and her sisters, Mary Lou Hall and Brenda Tuttle. Also predeceased were brothers-in-law, Charles West, Will Bowling, Tommy Hall, Otis Tuttle; sister-in-law Marcella West; and niece, Darlene West.
Mildred is survived by daughter, Patricia LeMond, of Lexington, KY; four grandchildren, Jon and Marc Blevins, Sarah Tower and Matthew West; one great-grandchild, Brentley Tower; and several brothers and sisters. Mildred graduated from Ohio State University with an undergraduate degree in education and later a master’s degree in science. Mildred’s passion for hard work and teaching was evident – she changed many lives as a teacher and was later a principal in Columbus, OH.
When Mildred and Jack retired to Florida, she was a substitute teacher and active member in her local community. “Busy hands are happy hands” was Mildred’s motto. And she loved to play Scrabble.
Mildred and her husband, Jack, also had a passion for travel. They traveled around the world frequently where they enjoyed learning and experiencing the joy of God’s gifts to this world. Yet, with all the wonders of the world, Mildred especially always loved to visit Kentucky’s beautiful natural habitats and Seattle was never far from her memories.
Mildred and Jack were committed blood donors during their lives. A dedicated blood donor, Mildred donated at least 95 pints of blood in her lifetime. Friends and family may call on Thursday, May 9 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Milward Funeral Home, 391 Southland Drive, Lexington, KY 40503.
Funeral services will be on Friday, May 10, 2019. First, visitation from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Maeder-Quint Tiberi Funeral Home, 1068 South High Street, Columbus, OH 43206. Second, graveside service will occur at approximately 1:30 p.m. at Green Lawn Cemetery, 1000 Greenlawn Avenue, Columbus, OH 43223.
