OBITUARY ANGELO ARUTA May 20, 1926 – November 2, 2018 Angelo “Poppa Joe” Aruta May 20, 1926 – November 2, 2018 Resident of San Jose, CA In sadness we announce that Poppa Joe passed away on Friday, Nov. 2nd at the young age of 92. He was born in Corona, New York, to parents Carmello Aruta and Catherine Benfante.
He was the third child of seven born to the couple. Joe graduated high school, and met Rosary Sulli in E. Elmhurst, NY at age 19. She would take the trolley home from school, and he would follow her while riding his horse.
He’d wait for her to exit and would walk her the rest of the way home. They courted for four years and later married on June 5th of 1948. Little did they know, that blessed union would last for 70 wonderful years.
Work brought the couple to San Jose, Ca in December of 1960. Joe joined the plasterers union early in life and worked closely with his father until he moved to California. Poppa Joe, as most people knew him, had a big heart, and was always willing to lend a hand where ever it was needed.
He was a loving, compassionate and generous father and grandfather. He gave of himself freely, whether it was a house project, school function, advice or family BBQ. Joe was very proud of his family and spent all of his spare time enjoying them.
He liked to go camping, ride his motorcycle, vacations at Pismo Beach, work, watch a good western and an occasionally a trip to the casino. Poppa Joe will be dearly missed by his loving wife, Rosary, four devoted boys; Chuck and Debbie Aruta, Jim and Celia Aruta, Joe and Penny Aruta and Dan and Tina Aruta. He was blessed with nine grandchildren; Tracee and Frank Chiodo, Chuck and Laura Aruta, Jennifer and Randy Cushman, Jimmy and Danielle Aruta, Joey and Amanda Aruta, Danielle and Josh Brown, Courtney Aruta and fiance’, C.J. Ortiz, Jay Aruta and Kristi and Casey Snodgrass.
An adored great-grandfather to Nicholas, Tiffany, Frankie, Tyler, Tony, Tiana, Lily, Nori, Ezra, Joey, Roy, Carson and Evan. He was also a dear brother to Marie Cacciola, Katherine Benfante, Charles and Myra Aruta, and Daniel Aruta and a kind brother-in-law to Joi Wright. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Louis Aruta and a sister, Santina Aruta.
Friends and family are welcome to attend a funeral service on Thursday, November 8th at 12:30pm in Oak Hill Funeral Home’s, Chapel of the Roses, with entombment to follow. In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made in honor of Poppa Joe’s name to the American Cancer Society, www. cancer.org, or 1-800-227-2345.
