Ann Elizabeth Small With gratitude for a life well lived, we announce the passing of Ann E. Small at Bedford Court Senior Living Community on August 30, 2018. Born February 26, 1921 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, she was the daughter of the late Addie and Al Smrz. She married and moved to Washington, DC in 1943.

A retired art teacher in the Montgomery County School system, Ann received a Bachelor’s degree in Art Education and a Master of Arts in Reading from the University of Maryland. In 1962, Ann successfully met the challenge of blending two families when she married Jack A. Small of Takoma Park. They thereafter resided in Damascus, Maryland.

She enjoyed gardening, art and craft exhibitions, reading and making puppets for children of family and friends. She was a longtime member of the Laytonsville Garden Club and the Damascus Women’s Club. Ann participated in the faith community of the Methodist Church and for many years was active in providing outreach to those in need and at risk.

She was known for her great sense of humor, sweet disposition and compassionate spirit. She loved to read and often said, “If you have a good book you can get through anything”. Ann was preceded in death by her husband Jack; and by the father of her children, Clarence Misfeldt, her sons David and Richard Misfeldt, her granddaughter Jenny and her stepdaughter, Suzanne di Pasquale.

She is survived by her son, Paul Misfeldt and his wife Sheila, and grandsons Jerimiah and Bryan Misfeldt. She is also survived by her husband Jack’s children and grandchildren whom she loved dearly, Carolyn McDowell, Jacqueline Small, Linda Chaney, John Bain, Cami Bain, Bayne McDowell, Jacqui Potter, Randall Potter and Lisa Shyda. Also surviving are beloved 4 great grandchildren and one great, great granddaughter, nieces, nephews, cousins and a community of friends.

Of special note are Ann’s enduring friendships with Sharon Berbert and Patty Williams for whom she was both a mother figure and a dear friend. The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to the staff of Bedford Court, especially to Marcy, Maria and Janet. A memorial service to honor Ann’s life will be held on Saturday, September 8, at 2:00pm at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, 21720 Laytonsville Road, Laytonsville, Maryland 20882.

A reception follows in St. Paul’s Fellowship Hall.
